Accounting Internship

Procedures for obtaining college credit

  • Complete the Internship Application
  • Obtain an internship on your own or with the help of the College Business Placement Office
  • Internship credit is only available for work performed at a professional level. This judgment as to whether work to be performed will be at a professional level is at the sole discretion of the internship coordinator. In general, work performed as a student worker at SIU, and work performed for tax preparation or other small businesses (e.g., H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, small not-for-profit organizations, etc.) will not qualify.
  • 3-hours of internship credit requires at least 300 hours of professional work.
  • ACCT 495 applicants need a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 both overall and in accounting, and the completion of at least two upper level accounting courses.
  • ACCT 595 applicants need a minimum GPA in graduate school of 3.2/4.0 overall.
  • Complete the internship application form and return it to the internship coordinator in the School of Accountancy, Rehn Hall 232
  • If your internship is approved, register for ACCT 495 or ACCT 595.
    • ACC 495 Internship -- Supervised work experience in professional accounting.
      Prerequisite: Outstanding record in accounting. Mandatory Pass/Fail only.
      Not for graduate credit.
    • ACC 595 Internship Supervised work experience in professional accounting.
      Prerequisite: Outstanding record in accounting. Mandatory S/U only.
  • During your internship, write a brief letter or memo about what you have accomplished to date and what you hope to accomplish during the second half of your internship and remit to the internship coordinator. An email attachment is acceptable: modom@business.siu.edu
  • Near the completion of your internship:
    • Write a final letter or memo about you have accomplished and remit it to the internship coordinator and
    • Have your supervisor remit to the internship coordinator a confirmation of your 300 hour internship.
