Students gain entrepreneurship experience - Christi Mathis, University Communications
Students in Kay M. Nelson’s small business management class at Southern Illinois University Carbondale learned first hand this fall the educational value of experience coupled with classroom instruction and practical information from business experts. In teams, the students studied a new product and its feasibility and created marketing campaigns and proposals. As the semester wrapped up, they made formal presentations in a special competition.

Garnett earns Risk Management Certification - Meredith Thomas
photo of Shari Garnett The College of Business would like to congratulate Business Manager Shari Garnett for passing all qualifications to earn the designation of Certified Risk Manager. Garnett has been at SIUC for 18 years, and joined the College in January 2010. Before joining the College, she worked in the Office of Risk Management for 4 years and the Internal Audit Office for 6.5 years.

Business college graduates give back - Greg Scott, SIU Foundation
Some alumni of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Business are wasting no time in offering financial assistance to support students who are following in their footsteps. Recent graduates of the college -- Candice McCloud (business management in 2007), Xavier Mims (management in 2008), and Janaya Tucker (accounting in 2007 and master’s in business administration in 2008) -- have in short order made a commitment to establish scholarships and offer additional assistance to current students.

Southern Illinois University students fared well during the recent 2010 National Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization Annual Conference. Renee Favreau of Carbondale won the award for Best Student Leader at the conference.

SIC forms partnership with SIU College of Business - Meredith Thomas
SIU College of Business is excited to announce a collaborative partnership with Southeastern Illinois College (SIC), located in Harrisburg, Illinois. The two institutions will work together to support and promote SIUC’s new online bachelor’s degree completion program in business administration. The 60 credit hour program will be offered starting in January 2011.

GBA members learn from local business owner - Whitney Schaefer
Even though students receive a majority of their education in the classroom, there are some important lessons that will not be learned until the student obtains work experience in their chosen field. To give its members a head start on some of those important areas, the Graduate Business Association brought in George Sheffer, Owner of Murdale True Value in Carbondale, on November 1 to discuss what he has learned from starting his own successful small business.

Brittany Greathouse, a fourth generation SIU student, has started off her freshman year with a mentality geared towards success. Majoring in accounting and minoring in Spanish, she is focused on obtaining a high GPA as well as getting involved not only within the College of Business, but with SIU as a whole.

Locke named Illinois CPA Society Mary T. Washington Wylie Fellow - Whitney Schaefer
LaToya Locke, a 2005 graduate of the SIU College of Business, was recently named a Mary T. Washington Wylie Fellow by the Illinois CPA Society. The Mary T. Washington Wylie Program was started to provide educational, professional, and leadership opportunities to African Americans and other minorities within the accounting profession.

CoB introduces Online Undergraduate Completion Program - Whitney Schaefer
The College of Business Online Undergraduate Completion Program will be initiating in January 2011. It is designed for students who have completed their general and core coursework requirements. This program accommodates students transferring from community college and other universities, as well as students wanting to complete their bachelor’s degree. Upon completion, graduates will earn a bachelor’s degree of Business Administration

Nasco appointed Director of MBA Programs - Whitney Schaefer
The College of Business is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Suzanne Nasco as the new Director of MBA Programs. This position is being reintroduced so that the expanding program can advance successfully. Nasco will oversee the on-campus MBA as well as the online degree program.

Accounting student presents tax research - Whitney Schaefer
Diamond Garner, a junior in Accounting, presented her research project on July 9, 2010 at the 7th Annual McNair/ILSAMP Research Institute Research Symposium in Guyon Auditorium. Garner was one of the 11 McNair Scholars. Her work titled “Determinant of Paid Tax Preparer Usage” addresses the use of paid tax-preparers by looking at multiple tax return and demographic variables.

High school students to learn about business world - Christi Mathis
A contingent of minority high school students from across America will visit Southern Illinois University this month and find out for themselves that the world is their oyster. SIU’s College of Business and Administration will host about 20 students who will be high school juniors or seniors this fall in a weeklong residency program June 14-21.

The College of Business Executive Advisory Board elected Adaire Putnam as their new chairperson on April 16, 2010. Putnam was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. In 1981, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in communications with a minor in business.

Registered Student Organization (RSO) recognized - Amanda Weaver
The College of Business Student Council officially filed for a name change to the Business Leadership Council (BLC) in the fall of 2009. The organization is composed of representatives from each of the College of Business registered student organizations. The new name was a catalyst in creating a new identity that reinvigorated the culture of the organization. As the group began to change, some attrition occurred, resulting in a turnover of several officer positions during the fall semester.

Davidson named SIU's outstanding teacher - Christi Mathis
Henry J. Rehn Professor of Finance Wallace N. "Dave" Davidson III is Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Outstanding Teacher for 2010. The University-wide honor is part of the Excellence Through Commitment Awards Program, established in 2003. Chancellor Samuel Goldman will host a dinner honoring the award winners on April 20 at the Student Center.

Sears, Ace Hardware Agreement Has SIU Roots - Meredith Rhoads
A recently-formed partnership between Ace Hardware and Sears Holdings Corporation has its roots in the Southern Illinois University College of Business. Through a relationship between two alumni, Ace Hardware will begin carrying Sears' best selling hardware line, Craftsman Tools, in their stores, beginning in May 2010.

4th Annual Saluki Expo and Brunch to be held at MVC Tournament - Amanda Weaver
It's almost that time of year again. March Madness is around the corner, and for Saluki Men's Basketball fans, it's all kicked off by the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri. It also marks a new tradition started by the SIU Department of Marketing, the Saluki Expo and Brunch at the MVC Tournament. The fourth annual Saluki Expo and Brunch will be held in the St. Louis Hilton at the Ballpark in the Archview room on March 6th from 9:30- 12:30 pm.

Students win accounting scholarships, trophies - Christi Mathis
More than 300 high school and community college students and about 30 teachers converged at Southern Illinois University on Friday, Feb. 5, for the 12th Annual Accounting Challenge. A total of $3,050 in scholarships along with trophies went to students who competed individually and in team challenges.

On February 2, 2010, senior finance major, Vincent Hardy, was contacted by Tyjuan Cratic, the Media Coordinator of the College Democrats' student organization on campus, to sit on the student panel as part of the "Southern Debate," which featured four out of the five Democratic candidates competing for the nomination in the Feb. 2 primary. Debate participants included Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, former Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman, Chicago Urban League CEO Cheryle R. Jackson, and attorney Jacob Meister.

During the fall 2009 semester, four MBA students: Sarah Gould, Austin McCree, Chris Smith, and Niklas Wagner received extensive praise from Southern Illinois Bank for their outstanding promotional plan which the students prepared for the company during their MBA Promotions Management class' with Dr. Cheryl Burke Jarvis. On December 16, 2009 the Board of Directors of Southern Illinois Bank in West Frankfort met and bank President James Renik and Vice President Toni Dunning presented the students' proposal to the entire board.

Marketing Student invited to NFL Scouting Combine, Marketing, Marketing student and Saluki football player Scott Ravaneski, a member of the 2008 All-Conference Academic team and the 2009 football conference title, has been invited to try out for the NFL Scouting Combine. The NFL Combine is a showcase of the top 250-300 players in the country.

Robyn Phelan lands an internship of a lifetime - Amanda Weaver
Marketing student Robyn Phelan just finished an experience of a lifetime in her hometown of Bridgeview, IL. Phelan, who is a senior, was asked to become an intern for the Chicago Fire, an American professional soccer club based in Bridgeview, Illinois, over break.
