College of Business recognizes two outstanding alumni

The College of Business would like to recognize two exceptional alumni for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields. Gregory S. Sprehe, was named the Southern Illinois Business Leader of the Year and Clinton McDonnough is the Executive of the Year.

The Southern Illinois Business Leader of the Year award recognizes a person who has shown a lifetime commitment to a career in business and the generation of economic benefit to southern Illinois. The person chosen serves as a role model for their peers and inspires students of the college to fulfill their potential in the business world. In order to be considered for this award, one needs to be a business and residence in the 19 counties in the south of Illinois Route 64, show commitment to southern Illinois, have outstanding service and dedication to a career in business as well as demonstrate outstanding leadership, and obtain a position of prominence within their field.

Gregory S. Sprehe received his BS in aeronautical engineering from St. Louis University and his MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a member of the SIU College of Business Management External Advisory Board. In 1988, along with three other investors, Sprehe purchased Com-Pac International, a bankrupt companyat the time. Throughout the years, he has become the sole owner of Com-Pac, and has grown the company from its original 35 employees to its current 250 employees. The Carbondale headquarters takes up 96,000 square feet of space. All operations including product development, manufacturing, warehousing, and administration are housed in the Carbondale facility.

The College is very proud of Mr. Sprehe and Mr. McDonnough for all of their successes and congratulates them for their prestigious awards.

The Executive of the Year award recognizes an individual who upholds a commitment to excellence in business. This individual presents a positive example to the students and young graduates of the college. The award recipient needs to show outstanding service and dedication to a career in business, outstanding executive leadership, and hold a position of prominence within their field.

Clinton McDonnough received his BS in accounting from SIU in 1977. McDonnough is the Dallas Office Managing Partner for Ernst & Young LLP (EY). He is responsible for leading all day-to-day operations in one of the firm’s largest markets. This includes overseeing delivery of the highest levels of quality client service to EY’s numerous Dallas-based clients, as well as working with various leaders to provide a positive work environment. Prior to his current responsibilities, McDonnough served as the firm’s Managing Partner of Assurance & Advisory Business Services for the southwest area practice. He was responsible for the overall client focus, people initiative, and operations performance which encompasses core audit and assurance, employee benefit plan, internal audit, transaction support, and IT assurance services.
