College of Business Distinguished Seniors

April 26-The Southern Illinois University College of Business would like to congratulate Robyn Phelan, Nicki Raufer, Matt Simpson, Vance Sawyer, and Amanda Weaver on becoming five of the 2010 Top 25 Distinguished Seniors.

Each spring SIU selects 25 of its highest achieving seniors to be recognized with this award.” This year, twenty percent of the recipients hail from the College of Business. These students have shown a level of commitment and dedication to the university that had led them to be given this prestigious designation.

To be considered for the top 25 distinguished seniors award, recipients must submit an application and two letters of recommendation, maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and demonstrate their service and extensive involvement within the school and community, where they have excelled.

The College of Business is also proud to recognize and give accolades to Stephen Putbrese on receiving one of two Super Student Awards across campus. This award is given to a full-time student entering their last year of undergraduate studies, currently employed, actively involved in at least two Registered Student Organizations and had a minimum 3.5 overall grade point average. Putbrese is a Sophomore from Xenia, Illinois majoring in Finance and Pre-Med.

This year’s top 25 Distinguished Seniors were recognized at a banquet held in their honor on April 10th.

Stephan Putbrese

Why did you choose SIU? I felt like it was big enough that I would receive a good education but still small enough that I would not feel lost in the crowd.

Nicki Raufer
Major: Marketing
Graduation Date: May 2010
Hometown: Bloomington, IL

What is your reaction to receiving this award? I was both shocked and honored. I have always felt that attending SIU was one of the best decisions in my life thus far and receiving this honor was a way for SIU to show they appreciated my contributions as well.

Vance Sawyer
Major: Accounting
Graduation Date: Dec 2010
Hometown: Metropolis, IL

What is your proudest moment at SIU? My proudest moment came as the School of Accounting Challenge Coordinator. The Accounting Challenge is a daylong competition for high school students. It is a great recruiting tool for the School of Accountancy and it has brought in over 300 students to the REC Center. The Accounting Challenge is what first introduced me to the SIU School of Accountancy as a high school student and now I take pride in being in charge of presenting the School of Accountancy to potential Salukis.

Matthew Simpson
Major: Business Economics and Finance
Graduation Date: May 2010
Hometown: Rockford, IL

What is your proudest moment at SIU? I am very proud of the things I’ve accomplished here at SIU, but I don’t think my proudest moment has taken place yet. My proudest moment will be walking across the stage to receive my diploma.

Amanda Weaver
Major: Marketing
Graduation Date: May 2010
Hometown: Springfield, IL

What is your reaction to winning this award? When I found out I was chosen for this award, I was surprised and excited. I had one of my friends reread the letter to see if I misread the message. It is amazing to be recognized for all of my hard work and dedication at SIU. My time at SIU has allowed me to grow as an individual. I believe that my accomplishments here at SIU are only the beginning of the success I see in the future for myself.
