SIC forms partnership with SIU College of Business

November 17, 2010, Meredith Thomas

SIU College of Business is excited to announce a collaborative partnership with Southeastern Illinois College (SIC), located in Harrisburg, Illinois. The two institutions will work together to support and promote SIU’s new online bachelor’s degree completion program in business administration. The 60 credit hour program will be offered starting in January 2011.

Students who are interested in this educational opportunity must first complete the first two years of their business degree program, including required courses from the University Core Curriculum and the College of Business pre-requisites at a community college or four-year institution to be eligible to apply. For students who choose to do their preliminary work at SIC, the recommended path of completion is to complete SIC’s Associate of Science degree, which includes the necessary freshman and sophomore level core classes. SIC has developed a specific curriculum for their students to follow, which includes all pre-requisite courses for SIU’s program.

The partnership came about when the College of Business announced the new program, and that they would be seeking partnerships with community colleges. Brian S. Surprenant, Dean of Academic Services at SIC recalled, “SIC saw this as an opportunity to provide the residents of the Southeastern Illinois College district with a way to further their education that would otherwise be limited or unavailable to them…Flexible course scheduling and online instruction helps individuals to navigate around the road-blocks to achieve their educational goals.”

This partnership will serve as a great support to SIU’s newest online program (the College of Business launched an online MBA in fall 2009), and will ensure a smooth transition from one program to another. "This partnership will make the transition to SIU a very seamless one for Southeastern's students. They will know exactly what to take at SIC and exactly how it will transfer into SIU's program," said Dana Keating, Vice President for Academic Affairs for SIC. "Most importantly SIC's students will benefit from this partnership, and when students benefit, it is a win for Southeastern as an institution."

The online undergraduate program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, the top designation that can be obtained by academic programs in business. Accredited programs represent superior academic quality in the faculty, services, resources and materials students are given at their respective university. This new program was developed in an effort to offer an accredited business degree program, with the convenience of online delivery, for those who are unable to relocate to a physical campus.

SIU hopes that other community colleges will follow in the footsteps of SIC, by promoting the educational advancement of their students and facilitating a smooth transition. “We appreciate the cooperation and support from SIC, and look forward to offering students this exciting opportunity to take the next important step in continuing their education,” said Dennis Cradit, Dean of the College of Business.
