    Garnett earns Risk Management Certification
    The College of Business would like to congratulate Business Manager Shari Garnett for passing all qualifications to earn the designation of Certified Risk Manager. Garnett has been at SIUC for 18 years, and joined the College in January 2010. Before joining the College, she worked in the Office of Risk Management for 4 years and the Internal Audit Office for 6.5 years. [Read the full story]
  • Business college graduates give back
    Some alumni of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Business are wasting no time in offering financial assistance to support students who are following in their footsteps. Recent graduates of the college -- Candice McCloud (business management in 2007), Xavier Mims (management in 2008), and Janaya Tucker (accounting in 2007 and master’s in business administration in 2008) -- have in short order made a commitment to establish scholarships and offer additional assistance to current students.   • SIC forms partnership with SIU College of Business
    SIU College of Business is excited to announce a collaborative partnership with Southeastern Illinois College (SIC), located in Harrisburg, Illinois. The two institutions will work together to support and promote SIUC’s new online bachelor’s degree completion program in business administration.     Brittany Greathouse, a fourth generation SIUC student, has started off her freshman year with a mentality geared towards success.     LaToya Locke, a 2005 graduate of the SIUC College of Business, was recently named a Mary T. Washington Wylie Fellow by the Illinois CPA Society. The Mary T. Washington Wylie Program was started to provide educational, professional, and leadership opportunities to African Americans and other minorities within the accounting profession.   • CoB introduces Online Undergraduate Completion Program
    The College of Business Online Undergraduate Completion Program will be initiating in January 2011. It is designed for students who have completed their general and core coursework requirements. This program accommodates students transferring from community college and other universities, as well as students wanting to complete their bachelor’s degree.     Accounting student presents tax research
    Diamond Garner, a junior in Accounting, presented her research project on July 9, 2010 at the 7th Annual McNair/ILSAMP Research Institute Research Symposium in Guyon Auditorium. Garner was one of the 11 McNair Scholars. Her work titled “Determinant of Paid Tax Preparer Usage” addresses the use of paid tax-preparers by looking at multiple tax return and demographic variables.   • Registered Student Organization (RSO) recognized
    The College of Business Student Council officially filed for a name change to the Business Leadership Council (BLC) in the fall of 2009. The organization is composed of representatives from each of the College of Business registered student organizations. The new name was a catalyst in creating a new identity that reinvigorated the culture of the organization. As the group began to change, some attrition occurred, resulting in a turnover of several officer positions during the fall semester. [Read the full story]
  • Davidson named SIUC's outstanding teacher
    Henry J. Rehn Professor of Finance Wallace N. "Dave" Davidson III is Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Outstanding Teacher for 2010. The University-wide honor is part of the Excellence Through Commitment Awards Program, established in 2003.   • Sears, Ace Hardware Agreement Has SIU Roots
    A recently-formed partnership between Ace Hardware and Sears Holdings Corporation has its roots in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale College of Business.     It's almost that time of year again. March Madness is around the corner, and for Saluki Men's Basketball fans, it's all kicked off by the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri. It also marks a new tradition started by the SIUC Department of Marketing, the Saluki Expo and Brunch at the MVC Tournament.   • Students win accounting scholarships, trophies
    More than 300 high school and community college students and about 30 teachers converged at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Friday, Feb. 5, for the 12th Annual Accounting Challenge.   • Finance student panelist for Senate debate
    On February 2, 2010, senior finance major, Vincent Hardy, was contacted by Tyjuan Cratic, the Media Coordinator of the College Democrats' student organization on campus, to sit on the student panel as part of the "Southern Debate," which featured four out of the five Democratic candidates competing for the nomination in the Feb. 2 primary. Debate participants included Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, former Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman, Chicago Urban League CEO Cheryle R. Jackson, and attorney Jacob Meister.     During the fall 2009 semester, four MBA students: Sarah Gould, Austin McCree, Chris Smith, and Niklas Wagner received extensive praise from Southern Illinois Bank for their outstanding promotional plan which the students prepared for the company during their MBA Promotions Management class' with Dr. Cheryl Burke Jarvis. On December 16, 2009 the Board of Directors of Southern Illinois Bank in West Frankfort met and bank President James Renik and Vice President Toni Dunning presented the students' proposal to the entire board.
