First MBA Foundation Workshop a success
August 24, 2011,
The College of Business began a new educational endeavor, hosting four foundation workshops to give its participants the basic fundamentals of business. The workshops were held August 8-12 and 15-19 and had a total of 9 students in attendance. Completion of the workshops could be used to satisfy the 31 hours of pre-requisite coursework, mandatory for those who were not business majors as an undergraduate.
Eden Thorne, Director of Development for the College of Engineering at SIU, enrolled in the General MBA Study and Research workshop. She found the sessions extremely useful. She stated, “The workshop I attended provided me with a great grasp of the core concepts and especially how they all tie together so much. The slides were excellent and provided a great reference for later use.” When asked if she would recommend the Foundation Workshops to others she said, “Definitely. Although it may seem a bit daunting to some, the idea that a 2 week period can eliminate several semesters of actual class-time makes it worthwhile. I only wish they had started this years ago - I'd likely be almost done with my MBA!”
Suzanne Nasco, Director of MBA Programs and Associate Professor of Marketing, has spearheaded the program. Dr. Nasco feels the workshops went extremely well and looks forward to having more of them. She explained that the workshops can be completed by anyone with a bachelor’s degree, whether they are interested in earning an MBA, or just expanding their business acumen. Those not interested in an MBA can earn a Business Fundamentals Certificate.
The next Foundation Workshops will be held in January 2012, prior to the start of the spring semester.
