    On November 22, the College of Business donated more than 2,500 cans of food to Carbondale’s Good Samaritan House. The house helps those in the area that are less fortunate, and with the increased demand for the services the pantries provide, the donations from the college comes at a great time.     College of Business alumna, Robyn Phelan (Marketing, 2011) recently was hired as the Internet Marketing Manager with MGM Resorts International in Las Vegas, Nevada, and currently handles the online campaigns for the Circus Circus Las Vegas and Mirage hotels. Phelan moved to Las Vegas six months ago with the opportunity to work as an intern with College of Business alumnus, Shawn Rorick, on the ground-breaking interactive marketing conference, Digital World Expo, which took place September 2011.     The KPMG Foundation has awarded Chanta Thomas, an Accounting doctoral student at SIU, a $10,000 KPMG Minority Accounting Doctoral Scholarship. The scholarship, renewed for the 2011-2012 academic year, is renewable for up to five years at $10,000 per year. [Read the full story]

    SIU alum opens premier rock climbing facility
    SIU alumnus, Daniel Chancellor (Management, 2005), his brother David, and Ian Anderson won the 2011 St. Louis County Economic Councils Business Plan Contest; allowing them to begin the process of building an indoor rock climbing facility in the heart of St. Louis called “Climb So iLL”. The Chancellor brothers hope the gym will provide a place that will promote community and fitness though the unique indoor climbing experience. [Read the full story]

    AMA host 3rd annual Turkey Trot
    The American Marketing Association at Southern Illinois University will host the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 19, 2011. The Turkey Trot event features a 5K run/walk as well as opportunities to raise awareness about Spinal Muscular Atrophy and the Special Olympics.     Accounting sophomore named one of MVC’s Elite 18
    Southern Illinois cross country athlete Brian Dixon has been named one of the Missouri Valley Conference's Elite 18 winners for the fall season. The Elite 18 Award Program was established by the MVC in the fall of 2010 to honor the highest achievement in academics and athletics by a student-athlete in each MVC-sponsored sport. A sophomore majoring in accounting, Dixon holds a 4.0 GPA. [Read the full story]

    The College of Business hosts food drive for Good Samaritan House
    In November, the College of Business is hosting a food drive challenge including the School of Accountancy, the Departments of Finance, Management, and Marketing and the Dean’s Office in a food drive competition.     Genesha Pender has a lot on her plate. She is a senior who is double majoring in finance and accounting with specializations in investments and tax, respectively. Her ambition and hard work recently earned her the 2011-2012 Roger and Sally Tedrick Student Investment Scholarship. This was a weeklong competition that challenged 20 participants to turn their entrepreneurial ideas into working business plans.     The College of Business at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is launching a new program to enhance business students' success and their connectivity to the college's faculty and staff. Beginning this fall, the iPad U program will provide all freshman business majors who reside in the Living Learning Community at Brown Hall on Thompson Point an iPad 2 for use during the 2011-2012 academic year.     Minority students will travel from all over the country to Southern Illinois University Carbondale this month to explore opportunities in the world of business. About 30 high school juniors and seniors from as far away as California will be on campus June 18-25 for the “Exploring Careers in Business” summer residency program. The focus of the seminar is on finance, marketing, business economics, accounting, management, leadership skills and networking.     For nine Saturdays from February through April, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program hosted by Beta Alpha Psi helped nearly 200 people with their tax returns. The student-run accounting society filed 377 Federal and State income tax returns. [Read the full story]

    Dr. Uma Sekaran ("Chinni") passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at her home in San Jose at the age of eighty four. The fourth of Mr. and Mrs. Pennathur Natesa Iyer's five children born in Madras (now called Chennai), India, she was married to Asthagiri ("George") Sekaran for 65 years until his demise in 2008.   • Accounting Challenge draws 350 participants
    The test seemed simple enough for the 350 students attending the Accounting Challenge at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Begin by placing an egg in a plastic bag and then create a container to encapsulate it using a bit of paper, a paper bag and some masking tape. Oh, but there’s a catch. The container had to so insulate the egg that it wouldn’t break when dropped from the second-floor balcony at the Student Recreation Center to the gym floor below. Many tried. Few succeeded.   • Job numbers soar for accounting students
    According to the Placement Center’s records, accounting majors had a 70 percent employment placement and continued education rate for undergraduates in the fall 2010 and a 62 percent in spring 2010, the highest in the College of Business. “We sometimes refer to ourselves as matchmakers,” Purdy said. “We connect our students to employers and we do it in multiple ways.” [Read the full story]

  • Busy lifestyle is just another day on the farm for Niendiek
    Growing up on a dairy farm in Southern Illinois, Allison Niendiek became familiar with the John Deere brand at a very young age. Years later during her sophomore year at SIUC, she convinced the John Deere recruiter at the Career Fair to accept her resume, even though he was only interested in engineering students. That’s how she got her foot in the door, only to continue to impress. Now Niendiek works full-time as their Product Manager of Sensors in the Crop Care Division located in Urbandale, Iowa.
