Dr. Mark Martinko speaks to doctoral students and faculty - Emily Morgan
College of Business doctoral students and faculty welcomed guest speaker Dr. Mark Martinko on Thursday, September 27. His presentation, entitled “Attribution Theory in the Organizational Sciences,” focused on what individuals attribute successes and failures to, and the role these attributions play in the context of organizational behavior.

SIU College of Business nearly doubles new student enrollment goals - Darla Huff
The College of Business (CoB) at Southern Illinois University surpassed its Fall 2012 enrollment goals with a total new student increase of 18.2 percent. This number nearly doubles the original goal college leaders had in mind.

Business college's 'STARS' initiative highlighted - Christi Mathis, University Communications
Tabitha Stone and Jill Gebke A student success and retention program at Southern Illinois University’s College of Business will soon be in the national spotlight. Jill Gebke and Tabitha Stone will present a program entitled “Aligning the STARS -- Faculty, Advisement and Students Working Together to Achieve Academic Success in Student Retention,” at the National Academic Advisory Association conference, Oct. 4-7, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Association honors Cheng for research, education - Tom Woolf, University Communications
photo of Rita Cheng Dr. Rita Cheng, Professor of Accountancy and Chancellor was awarded the “Enduring Lifetime Contribution Award” by the American Accounting Association for her outstanding contributions to the field of government and nonprofit accounting research and education. Dr. Cheng is the first woman to receive the award and only the 15th person overall to receive the award.

SIU students gather at their graduation dinner in France Over thirty College of Business students participated in the Grenoble Ecole de Management’s international summer school program in Grenoble, France this past summer. The students were escorted by Dr. Suzanne Altobello, Director of MBA Programs and Jenni Janssen, Marketing Director for MBA Programs.

Business alumnus coordinates second annual Digital World Expo - Heather Willis
Digital World Expo logo Business, media, and technology will be brought together in a three day conference created by 1996 College of Business alumnus, Shawn Rorick. The second annual Digital World Expo will take place in Las Vegas, NV from September 27 through September 29, 2012. The Digital World Expo is an annual conference highlighting emerging interactive and digital media channels, with in-depth workshops for attendees and new business for exhibitors and sponsors.

Leveraging Identities: Building Loyalty - Christi Mathis, University Communications
Jarvis, along with Paul W. Fombelle from Northeastern University and James Ward and Lonnie Ostrom from Arizona State University, studied the concept of identity synergy and how, if an organization can help you fulfill multiple identity roles, it affects your loyalty to that organization. Typically, loyalty manifests itself as customers purchase products to a company as well as through resistance to advertising campaigns from competitors.

Local Impact: Study Explores Landfills - Christi Mathis, University Communications
Dr Burnett talks with Diamond Garner and Scott Polczynski Royce D. Burnett, the KPMG Research Professor in Accountancy in SIU Carbondale’s College of Business, is working with two students on a research project that looks at the dual factors of economic and environmental sustainability in counties. The team is assessing the extent to which county refuse and landfill management activities as well as public awareness of those activities affect economic development.

Students participate in online summer courses - Heather Willis
This summer, nearly 300 College of Business students took advantage of the online courses. Approximately 35 students enrolled in the online Business and Administration Bachelor of Science degree-completion program (BNAD) took courses over the summer while the remaining participants were on-campus students who took one or more online courses offered through the online program.

College to hold MBA Foundation Workshops
The College of Business will once again hold their MBA Foundation Workshops in August. These workshops are geared to prepare incoming MBA students, graduate students, or working professionals with the basic knowledge of the business core subject areas, including accounting, finance, statistics/spreadsheet/information systems, and general MBA study and research.

Hamilton to head Dean's Advisory Board

Management students establish a scholarship for local high school - Nicole Trainor
photo of management students College of Business students, Alex Baine (Management, 2013) and Lane Dillard (Management, 2013) along with six of their friends teamed up to offer assistance to students much like themselves and founded the “Basement Crew (BC) Scholarship.” The BC Scholarship is intended to help Carbondale Community High School students who plan to attend college upon graduating from high school.

Greg Gilleylen stands by the Chicago Blackhawks logo Unlike most seniors in college who spend their spring breaks on the beach in the sun, Greg Gilleylen, a marketing senior from Aurora, Illinois spent his working alongside The Chicago Blackhawks and their marketing team as a part of The SIU Externship Program. The week-long program is administered by the SIU Alumni Association as well as the College of Business, and it provides students with valuable work experience and is a great way for students to enrich their resumes.

He will then join the “Big 4” accounting firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers, as a tax professional, in their office in Chicago, Illinois.

2012 Externships take place - Nicole Trainor

While traditional spring breaks often involve soaking up the sun and hanging out with friends, 127 SIU students, including 34 from the College of Business, participated in the week-long SIU Extern Program administered by the SIU Alumni Association. Nine of the last ten years, the College of Business led all other SIU colleges in the number of students who participated.

New online classes to be offered this summer - Nicole Trainor
woman on a beach The College of Business will be offering online classes to all business students, both on and off-campus this summer. Fourteen of the college’s core required courses will be offered throughout the summer. Each course will be 100 percent online, except for course exams, which will be taken in a lab for on-campus students and remotely for off-campus students.

local high school students test their creation Nearly 400 students from 23 area high schools and five community colleges will be in attendance at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s 14th annual School of Accountancy Accounting Challenge. The event, featuring tests of skills and knowledge for individuals and teams, is set for Friday, Feb. 10, at the Student Recreation Center’s small gym.

The CSL is based at Arizona State University, and is the premier joint academic-business research center in the world focused on “services science,” with the goal of creating and distributing knowledge about how to compete strategically through the profitable use of services.

Academic advisor spends time in Brazil - Nicole Trainor
photo of Darla Huff and friends College of Business academic advisor, Darla Huff, recently took a ten-week hiatus from advising duties for an adventure in Uberlandia, Brazil. She traveled with her husband Jonathan, who was assigned a sabbatical for his company, Dow AgriSciences. Uberlandia is located in South Central Brazil. However, they were able to travel to other areas of the country including Campinas, Caldas Novas, Sao Paulo, Ubatuba, and to enjoy many of Brazil’s breathtaking rural landscapes.
