Clark steps down after successful decade as chairman

After ten years of service, Dr. Terry Clark has requested to step down from his role as Chairman of the Department of Marketing. Upon his resignation, Clark wishes to return to the faculty and devote more of his time to teaching and research. 

“This is a moment of mixed emotions for the college.  We are saddened that Terry will no longer be the Chair. We all have benefited enormously from his leadership and his camaraderie, and we will certainly miss his spirited and thoughtful interactions on the Executive Committee,” stated Dean Dennis Cradit.  

During Clark's tenure as Chairman, the department went through many changes that encouraged greater interaction between faculty, staff and students, as well as with alumni. He initiated events within the department to encourage relationship building. He also played a pivitol role in forming the Marketing Department's External Advisory Board, a group of successful alumni and supporters who offer their support, expertise and resources to benefit marketing students and programs within the department.

Gordon Bruner II, professor of marketing, commented on Clark's service as Chairman, “When Dr. Clark became chair, he invigorated the department and brought a renewed sense of purpose and energy,”  “He was especially keen on being student-focused. He wanted students to feel welcomed in the department and proud of their major, so he came up with the idea to make t-shirts and caps with the bold statement "Marketing Rules!" on them, and give them away to our students. He also began the tradition of giving a banquet for our graduating seniors. Dr. Clark was our cheerleader, encouraging the faculty as well as students in a way that had not been done in many years so they would feel more connected to us.  He managed more like a fellow faculty member than a boss. He had a unique style that led to improved morale among the faculty.”  


Clark is a favorite among students, as is expressed in a quote from marketing senior, Mikensey Fox, “Dr. Clark always made every class interesting. He would literally kick off his shoes at the beginning of every class and get down to business. His students always seem to be his priority, and he made sure we knew our dreams were within reach.”

Clark earned both his bachelors and master’s degrees from SIU. He then went on to earn his doctorate from Texas A&M University in 1987. He held faculty positions at the University of Notre Dame and Emory University, before returning to southern Illinois to join the faculty and assume the role as Chairman in 1999. Upon Clark’s resignation, the Marketing Department faculty met and unanimously agreed that Associate Professor Cheryl Burke-Jarvis be appointed as the Interim Chairperson. Jarvis offers extensive experience in the classroom and an impressive research record, so she thoroughly understands the importance of both in pursuing the mission of the College.  Jarvis joined the SIU College of Business in fall 2009 from Arizona State University.
