Awards Banquet held to honor alumni

The College of Business recently hosted an awards banquet where four distinguished alumni were inducted into the College’s prestigious Hall of Fame. The accomplished individuals are: Kevin D. Bastien, Diane Compardo, Jeff Emme, and Stephen Parks.
New Hall of Fame inductees are selected based on professional and personal successes, contributions to the business world, and outstanding work within their communities.
Along with the Hall of Fame inductees, the College of Business also recognized Wesley Jay Gibson as the Executive of the Year.
The Executive of the Year recognizes an individual dedicated to a career in business, who has risen to a prominent position within his or her firm, and who has demonstrated a commitment to innovation. Executives of the Year have broadened the scope of economic opportunity through the transfer of technology and training in management skills. These executives serve as role models for their peers and inspire students of the college to fulfill their potential in the business world.
Profiles of the honorees:
Kevin D. Bastien earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1986 and his Masters of Accountancy in Taxation in 1987, both from SIU. He is the Chief Financial Officer for Edward Jones, a financial services firm serving serious, long-term investors. Mr. Bastien serves as CFO at the St. Louis, Missouri headquarters. He is a member of the SIU School of Accountancy’s External Advisory Board, and the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Greater St. Louis.
Diane Compardo earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1991, and her masters of accountancy in taxation in 1992, both from SIU. She is a Principal for Moneta Group, a comprehensive financial planning firm. Ms. Compardo joined the firm in 1997 as Moneta’s first professional consultant and was promoted to Partner in 2007. As a student at SIU, Ms. Compardo was a member of Beta Alpha Psi. She and her husband, Ron Wienstroer are both members of the College of Business Rehn Society and life members of the SIU Alumni Association.
Jeff Emme is a 1980 graduate of SIU in accounting. He is Senior Vice President of Tax for Sara Lee Corporation. Based in Downers Grove, Illinois, Sara Lee is a global manufacturer and marketer of consumer products. Mr. Emme has been employed by Sara Lee for twenty-five years and manages a staff of twenty-five in Downers Grove and an additional seventeen workers overseas. Mr. Emme is a life member of the SIU Alumni Association.
Stephen Parks graduated from the College of Business with a bachelors degree in Accountancy in 1980. After five years with KPMG, Steve joined the United States Congress, Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, where he worked on the Tax Reform Act of 1986, along with other legislation. In 1995 he assumed his current role as Vice President of Taxes and Infrastructure for General Electric. He is a life member of the SIU Alumni Association.
Wesley Jay Gibson graduated from SIU in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is Founder and Managing Partner of Gibson Consulting Group, LLC. Gibson Consulting Group provides operational consulting to Fortune 500 companies, private equity firms and manufacturers. As a student at SIU, Mr. Gibson was President of Beta Alpha Psi, Vice-President of the Accounting Society, and Senior Class President. Mr. Gibson is an emeritus member of the School of Accountancy Board of Advisors and is a lifetime member of the SIU Alumni Association.
“It was an honor to have the opportunity to recognize these five individuals. They have made undeniable contributions to their field. But the example they set for current and future students is a powerful message that will leave a lasting legacy far beyond the professional achievements each has produced,” said Dean Dennis Cradit.
