    The College of Business recently hosted an awards banquet where four distinguished alumni were inducted into the College’s prestigious Hall of Fame. The accomplished individuals are: Kevin D. Bastien, Diane Compardo, Jeff Emme, and Stephen Parks. Along with the Hall of Fame inductees, the College of Business also recognized Wesley Jay Gibson as the Executive of the Year.     On April 15, the College of Business recognized the hard work and success of its students, faculty, and staff at the annual Honors Day awards presentation.125 students were recognized with scholastic honors, and 100 students were awarded over $153,728 in scholarships and tuition waivers.   • Gebke and Stone to present at NACADA
    The College of Business would like to congratulate their own Chief Academic Advisor Tabitha Stone and Director of Enrollment Jill Gebke for being selected to present at the 2012 NACADA Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in October. Their presentation, entitled Aligning the STARS- Faculty, Advisement, and Students Working Together to Achieve Academic Success in Student Retention was chosen by the NACADA committee because of its high quality and interesting content.     Externship series: Greg Gilleylen, The Chicago Blackhawks
    Unlike most seniors in college who spend their spring breaks on the beach in the sun, Greg Gilleylen, a marketing senior from Aurora, Illinois spent his working alongside The Chicago Blackhawks and their marketing team as a part of The SIU Externship Program.   • Management students establish a scholarship for local high school
    College of Business students, Alex Baine (Management, 2013) and Lane Dillard (Management, 2013) along with six of their friends teamed up to offer assistance to students much like themselves and founded the “Basement Crew (BC) Scholarship.” The BC Scholarship is intended to help Carbondale Community High School students who plan to attend college upon graduating from high school.     Steve Olsher, 1992 SIU graduate in Speech Communications and successful entrepreneur, will be speaking to College of Business students Wednesday, April 4th at 5:00 p.m. in Rehn Hall, room 12. His presentation, entitled “The Millionaire Blueprint: Proven Ninja Tactics for Making a Fortune and a Difference,” will provide students with insight into the power of the internet and mobile media in today’s society.   • Clark steps down after successful decade as chairman
    After ten years of service, Dr. Terry Clark has requested to step down from his role as Chairman of the Department of Marketing for the SIU College of Business.     MAcc student's long journey
    Originally from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Arslan Jumakuliyev has overcome many challenges to get where he is today. Currently in his last semester here at SIU as a Master of Accountancy student with a focus in taxation, Arslan will graduate in May 2012. He will then join the “Big 4” accounting firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers, as a tax professional, in their office in Chicago, Illinois. [Read the full story]

    New online classes to be offered this summer
    The College of Business will be offering online classes to all business students, both on and off-campus this summer. Fourteen of the college’s core required courses will be offered throughout the summer. Each course will be 100 percent online, except for course exams, which will be taken in a lab for on-campus students and remotely for off-campus students. [Read the full story]

    The American Marketing Association, Chi Sigma Chi and SIU Campus Recreation are teaming up with Special Olympics Illinois to sponsor the 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge into Campus Lake at noon on Saturday, February 25.     Free Kaplan Practice Test for SIU Alumni Association members
    Current members of the SIU Alumni Association who wish to pursue graduate and professional degrees will have the opportunity to practice their test-taking skills with a Free Kaplan Practice Test given on SIU Carbondale’s campus, Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. The Association will provide members with the following tests: LSAT (law school); MCAT (medical school); GRE (graduate school); GMAT (business school); OAT (optometry school); DAT (dental school); and PCAT (pharmacy school).     Accounting Challenge draws hundreds of students
    The battle was on as hundreds of students converged at Southern Illinois University Carbondale for a two-phase test of their accounting knowledge and problem-solving ability at the 14th annual School of Accountancy Accounting Challenge. 400 students from 23 area high schools and community colleges vied on Feb. 10 for bragging rights, trophies and SIU Carbondale scholarships.     Nearly 400 students from 23 area high schools and five community colleges will be in attendance at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s 14th annual School of Accountancy Accounting Challenge.     Cheryl Burke Jarvis, Associate Professor of Marketing, recently attended the Annual Board Meeting and Academic Meeting for the Center for Services Leadership (CSL) in Phoenix, Arizona on Jan. 26 and 27. The CSL is based at Arizona State University, and is the premier joint academic-business research center in the world focused on “services science,” with the goal of creating and distributing knowledge about how to compete strategically through the profitable use of services.     Business Students receive Textbook Scholarships
    Four College of Business students were selected to receive a Textbook Scholarship from the SIU Alumni Association. The Association awarded over $15,000 in textbooks and supplies to 35 SIU Carbondale students on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Business students who were recipients of the scholarships included: Faith Freeman (senior, accountancy), Bryce Williams (junior, Business Administration), Stephanie Cessna (sophomore, accountancy), and Michael Henderson (sophomore, business-undecided).
