While some students spent their spring break on the beach in Florida, management senior Andrew Correll spent his break in Blaine, Minnesota, doing an externship with Major League Soccer (MLS). The Externship Program is a week-long program sponsored by the SIU Alumni Association and the College of Business. The program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain real-world work experience while boosting their resume.
Correll spent the week working for the National Sales Center, which prepares sales trainees to be hired by one of the 19 MLS teams. During his externship, he prepared statistical data by performing a trend analysis to show which MLS seasons had the highest number of ticket package sales. Correll was also involved in various sales skill building exercises and performed sales calls for the Colorado Rapids, a MLS team based in the Denver suburb of Commerce City, Colorado.
When asked if he had any advice for future externs, Correll said, “Make the most of every minute. I treated my experience as a week-long job interview and the day after ending my externship, I received a job offer.” After graduating in May, he plans to begin sales training in July and obtain an account executive position with an MLS team within 2-3 months.
