Erica Kirsch, a marketing senior, was one of 28 College of Business students who participated in the Externship Program over Spring Break. Kirsch spent her week externing at the Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis, Missouri, working with the Public Relations (PR), Development, and Community Relations departments.

The week after Spring Break was a Groundbreaking Ceremony for their new hospital, which gave Kirsch the perfect opportunity to get hands on event planning experience. She was able to meet with the PR director and the Administrator of the hospital to discuss plans for the event, and was able to meet with the entire groundbreaking ceremony committee and assist with their last minute details.

Kirsch was also given the opportunity to tour the surgical area and operating rooms, and witnessed part of a live spinal surgery performed by a world renowned surgeon. Although this doesn’t directly relate to her studies at SIU, Kirsch said the experience really helped her learn about the heart of the hospital, as well as better understand the importance of the jobs in the PR and Development departments.

When asked about her experience at the hospital, Kirsch said, “It was really special to see how much each patient was really affected by, and therefore was extremely appreciative of the PR team and all their efforts. I had never really thought about working for a non-profit organization before, but it is something I am definitely interested in now because I got to see how it touches the hearts of so many special people.”
