Kevin Purcell presents Organizational Behavior workshop
October 04, 2013,
Kevin Purcell, an alumnus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and an organizational development professional, recently conducted an organizational behavior workshop for university staff, affiliates and MBA students.
Purcell has more than 30 years of experience helping companies better understand how people behave in an organizational environment. He served as senior director for organization development at Microsoft Corp from 1993 to 2004. Since then, Purcell has been involved with similar work for Oracle Corporation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Memorial Health Systems of Illinois.
The focus of the Sept. 27 workshop at the College of Business Hub was on "In the Middle," a book by Barry Oshry. The group of 30 attendees participated in a variety of exercises demonstrating how people in different levels within a hierarchy respond to their conditions and to the other levels. The exercises provided valuable insight into the diverse roles at the top, middle, and bottom of organizations.
After the workshop, Mateo Correa, MBA student, stated that he has worked in different organizations with different structures and the workshop helped him understand better how each company behaved internally and towards its customers. “It was a very useful input to understand the challenges of the organizational structures and motivation methods.” Correa said.
