New project management RSO debuts at SIU
October 31, 2013,
Project Management Institute (PMI) is an organization widely known throughout the country for advancing the careers of its members by providing the tools and support to improve their project management skill set. These initiatives range from standard courses, informational seminars, and critically acclaimed certifications such as the Project Management Professional (PMP) which is internationally recognized.
Finally after a year of work and coordination with the University CIO office, Southern Illinois University can proudly say that it has officially been awarded the first PMI student chapter in the country. This allows our students to get exposure to project management practices early in their college education as well as gaining the hours needed to earn PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification while still in school. This is a highly sought after certification by employers in almost every discipline.
We have been given the opportunity to have a student chapter partially due to the RSO advisors’ project management experience. Dr. Kay Nelson is an experienced engineering and information technology project and portfolio manager who has been a guest speaker at PMI national and regional conferences. Dr. Jim Nelson has many years of information technology project management experience and uses his background widely in teaching database and other MIS classes.
The student PMI chapter at SIU will provide students with many different aspects of project management that will help them with their careers. We believe it’s important that students understand that project management is used in virtually every job, regardless of discipline or major. This RSO is open to all colleges and students and is sponsored by the Department of Management in the College of Business.
