The American Marketing Association (AMA) is helping raise money for Special Olympics through the Polar Plunge and Donut Dash.

AMA plays a huge role in helping with sales and marketing aspects for the Polar Plunge and Donut Dash.

Cassi Benson and Kimberly Potocki are the co-chairs of the Polar Plunge Marketing committee at SIU Carbondale.

“This year we created a flyer specific to the SIU campus that breaks down the steps to apply for both the Polar Plunge and Donut Dash,” Benson said. “In previous years, we promoted the events mainly toward community members, so this year our goal is to get the greatest amount of student participation yet. To do this, we are emailing all Greek organizations and giving presentations to chapters to promote the event. We are also putting fliers on campus, asking other RSO’s to join and creating a Facebook event.”

AMA is a co-sponsor for the SIU campus Polar Plunge, and its members constantly strive to become involved in and around campus to gain hands-on marketing and sales experience.

“The Polar Plunge allows a sales team to learn how to ‘cold call’ and go business to business asking for donations, as well as work as a marketing group to come up with new ways to promote the plunge to students and community members,” Benson said.

She adds that volunteers are needed to help make this event successful.

“For students looking for volunteer hours for participating in the plunge, the Office of Student Engagement said they will accept one hour of community service for participating in the event,” Benson said.

Outcomes for this year’s event are not yet determined, but the AMA members are asking for individuals to help support these two events to raise money for Special Olympics athletes in Illinois.

“We are encouraging students to not volunteer, but instead raise money for Special Olympics,” Benson said.

The Polar Plunge and Donut Dash will take place on Feb. 25, at the SIU Rec Center. Registration for both events will close Feb. 24 at 11:45 p.m.

Registration is $30 for the Donut Dash, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Those who register before Feb. 10, will receive a T-shirt. The Donut Dash is the only 5K race that not only tests your speed, but your ability to eat doughnuts, too! Participants will be treated to multiple doughnut stops along the route and will receive a one-minute deduction from their overall time for every doughnut they consume.

The Polar Plunge is a unique opportunity to support Special Olympics athletes by taking a dip into Illinois’ frigid winter waters. The plunge will begin at noon. Each plunger needs to raise a minimum of $100 to participate. Every plunger will receive a hooded sweatshirt and admission to the Post Plunge Party.
