Trained SIU student volunteers prepare tax returns for free - Christi Mathis
photo of a tax form Beta Alpha Psi, an SIU accounting organization, is conducting their annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to assist fellow students and the Carbondale community with their tax returns. IRS trained students will be offering the free tax preparation on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon in the lower level of Rehn Hall.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Business Placement Center have planned beneficial, student-centered events for this new semester. Just a sample of them include a Black Business Expo to connect black community business owners with students, the “Empowher” Networking Lunch-In to expose students to successful female business leaders and the long-awaited Chicago Career Trip.

College of Business PHD Students Win Award for their Research - Christi Mathis
photo of Ramin Bagherzadeh and Jose Saavedra Torres College of Business at SIU marketing doctoral students Ramin Bagherzadeh and Jose Saavedra Torres won a national award for their research paper, "Need for more: Conspicuous consumption, social settings and materialism." Their work provided more insight into how our feelings about social status affect our purchasing decisions.

Professor Jaehoon Lee’s research finds poor service can have a carryover effect on evaluations of other dimensions in service - Franchesca Alejo
One of CoB’s own has received recognition from Science Daily, Medical Express, Health Medicine Network and more for their research! Professor Lee’s most recent research publication will impact how current and future marketing practitioners do what they do. Utilizing previous research and incorporating a shift in social classes in America, he conducted four studies that revealed one’s perceived social class has an impact on overall service delivery evaluations.

New online MBA Analytics Concentration Available this Spring! - Chicago Tribune
The Pontikes Center advisory board has been very productive and achieved a truly impressive accomplishment. After realizing the need for an academic program that addressed the growing data-driven demands of companies across numerous industries, they were able to approve both the new MBA Analytics concentration and the supporting coursework in less than one year. A remarkable feat in such a short period of time! Beginning this spring, MBA online students will be able to start the series of 4 classes that will equip them with understanding, processing and acting on data collected from technologically-based sources such as social media and transactions.

Business alumnus Lynn McPheeters donates to help future business Salukis succeed - Christi Mathis
A big thank you to CoB alumnus F. Lynn McPheeters who is helping SIU students achieve their dreams for years and years to come. Chief financial officer and vice president of Caterpillar, Inc., he has donated $1 million to establish a scholarship for SIU College of Business Students. The McPheeters Family Scholarship will allow the college to award $40,000 annually to deserving first-generation students, like he once was. Learn more about his story here
