Alan Overton earned his B.A. in English from Emory University, and his Master's Degree in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received the Randall-Paulson Fellowship for the study of architecture and business. Immediately before coming to SIU, he practised as an architectural designer in Atlanta for five years, specializing in accessibility and sustainability, and accredited under the US Green Building Council's LEED Building Design and Construction program. His design projects ranged from residential/mixed-use facilities to aircraft hangars. While completing his AIA internship, he earned his M.B.A from Georgia State University.
His ongoing research focuses on consumer identity and self-concept; and the interplay of universality, customization and accessibility in product design.
