Majors and Minors

We are here to help you plan the best course of action to compete your desired major.  Below are the degree requirements for each of the College of Business majors plus the core classes you will need.  See your academic advisor if you have any questions.

Minors

Even if you are not a business major, a minor within one of our subject areas, Accounting, Business and Administration, Finance, Management, or Marketing, is an excellent complement to any major. Increase your marketability and expand your opportunities by declaring a minor in business!

Minor in Accounting

To earn a minor in Accounting, a student must complete all course prerequisites along with a minimum of 15 credit hours in accounting. The required coursework includes Accounting 220, 230 and nine (9) credit hours at the 300 level or above in accounting. All prerequisites for these classes must also be satisfied.

At least nine of the 15 credit hours must be taken at Southern Illinois University and students must earn at least a C for each of those courses and have a minimum 2.0 GPA for minor courses. Consult an advisor at the College of Business if you’re interested in earning a minor in Accounting.

Minor in Business and Administration

You can also select a minor in Business and Administration. To earn the minor, a student must complete 15 credit hours. The required coursework includes Accounting 220, 230, Finance 330, Management 304, and Marketing 304. You must also satisfy the prerequisites for these classes and earn a minimum grade of C and a minimum 2.0 GPA for the minor courses.; Consult an advisor about selecting a minor in Business and Administration.

Minor in Finance

You can choose a minor in Finance as well. To earn this minor, you must complete FIN 330 and nine (9) additional credit hours based upon your Finance option. There are three options for a minor in Finance: 1) Financial Institutions: FIN 331, 341 and 449; 2) Financial Management: FIN 361, 462 and 463; and 3) Investments: FIN 331, 432 and 433. You must also satisfy the prerequisites for these classes and earn a minimum grade of C and a minimum 2.0 GPA for the minor courses. Consult an advisor about selecting a minor in Finance.

Minor Management

You can also select a minor in Management. For College of Business majors, a minor in Management consists of a minimum of 15 credit hours, including Management 345 and 12 approved credit hours in management at the 300 level or above. For non-College of Business majors, a minor in Management consists of a minimum of 15 credit hours, including Management 304, 318, 345, and six credit hours in Management at the 300 level or above. You also need to satisfy all prerequisites for these classes.

To earn a Management minor, you must earn at least a C in each of the minor course requirements taken at SIU and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA for all minor courses. Consult an advisor about selecting a minor in Management.

Minor in Marketing

You can also earn a minor in Marketing. To do so, you must complete all prerequisite courses in addition to a minimum of 15 credit hours that include Marketing 304, 305 and nine (9) credit hours of marketing coursework at the 300 level or above (with the exception of Marketing 390, 493, 495 and 499).

You’ll need to earn at least a C in each of the minor course requirements you take at SIU and must have a minimum 2.0 GPA for all minor courses. Contact an advisor at the College of Business if you are interested in earning a minor in Marketing.

Majors outside the College of Business

Step 1: Speak with your advisor at your current college to inform them of your desire to add a business minor to your current major or to add a second major.

Step 2: Have your current college advisor complete a Change of Major form showing your current major and specialization.

Step 3: Come see us at the College of Business. Make an appointment to see an advisor to discuss your desired major or minor. Bring the Change of Major form to this meeting.

Step 4: Your College of Business advisor will complete the necessary paperwork to forward to Registration.
