Bailey to receive Distinguished Service Award - Christi Mathis, University Communications

Carbondale's Good Samaritan receives a big donation - Nicole Trainor
photo of students at Good Samaritan House On November 22, the College of Business donated more than 2,500 cans of food to Carbondale’s Good Samaritan House. The house helps those in the area that are less fortunate, and with the increased demand for the services the pantries provide, the donations from the college comes at a great time.

Marketing alumna lands job with MGM International - Nicole Trainor
Photo of Robyn Phelan College of Business alumna, Robyn Phelan (Marketing, 2011) recently was hired as the Internet Marketing Manager with MGM Resorts International in Las Vegas, Nevada, and currently handles the online campaigns for the Circus Circus Las Vegas and Mirage hotels. Phelan moved to Las Vegas six months ago with the opportunity to work as an intern with College of Business alumnus, Shawn Rorick, on the ground-breaking interactive marketing conference, Digital World Expo, which took place September 2011.

photo of Chanta Thomas The KPMG Foundation has awarded Chanta Thomas, an Accounting doctoral student at SIU, a $10,000 KPMG Minority Accounting Doctoral Scholarship. The scholarship, renewed for the 2011-2012 academic year, is renewable for up to five years at $10,000 per year.

The Elite 18 Award Program was established by the MVC in the fall of 2010 to honor the highest achievement in academics and athletics by a student-athlete in each MVC-sponsored sport.

There were about 75 attendees who crammed into the classroom to listen to SIU Alum O. Ray Angle, the Director of University Career Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, present on how to professionally network at social events.

Genesha Pender Genesha Pender has a lot on her plate. The senior is double majoring in finance and accounting with specializations in investments and tax, respectively. Her ambition and hard work recently earned her the 2011-2012 Roger and Sally Tedrick Student Investment Scholarship. Established by Roger and Sally Tedrick, this scholarship is awarded to members of the Saluki Student Investment Fund, who serve as a role model and spokesperson for SSIF.

Career Fair Southern Illinois University is hosting its annual All Majors Career Fair on Wednesday, October 19, 2011. The fair will take place in the Student Center ballrooms from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The College of Business encourages all students to attend, whether they are looking for an internship, career, or networking opportunities. Currently, there are over 50 companies and government organizations that are scheduled to be in attendance.

Zumba for the Cure - University Communications
zumba graphic The Student Recreation Center is partnering with The Business Leadership Council, a registered student organization, to host SIH Cancer Center: Zumba Core for the CURE. The ROTC is also participating in the event, which will be Oct. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. It will happen on Courts 4 and 5 and the community is welcome at this second annual fundraiser.

Marketing Senior Wins 2011 Collegiate Camp CEO Contest - Nicole Trainor
photo of Bryce Morrison Marketing senior, Bryce Morrison, recently won the 2011 Collegiate Camp CEO-Saluki Operation Bootstrap. The weeklong competition challenged 20 participants to turn their entrepreneurial ideas into working business plans. Each contestant received training throughout the week to start a business, and the competition concluded on the final day with a five minute pitch to a panel of judges. Morrison walked away victorious, with the promise of $7,500 in seed capital and $2,500 in consulting services, software and books.

First MBA Foundation Workshop a success - Nicole Trainor
The College of Business began a new educational endeavor, hosting four foundation workshops to give its participants the basic fundamentals of business. The workshops were held August 8-12 and 15-19 and had a total of 9 students in attendance. Completion of the workshops could be used to satisfy the 31 hours of pre-requisite coursework, mandatory for those who were not business majors as an undergraduate.

The event will be located outside Rehn Hall from 4:00-6:00p.m. Business major and minor students will have to opportunity to meet College of Business faculty and staff, talk with registered student organizations, win great door prizes, and enjoy free food and drinks.

Soldiers in Afghanistan hold up a Saluki flag he 1-14th Agribusiness Development Team at Camp Wright, stationed in Asadabad, Afghanistan posed with a Saluki flag to show their support from miles away. Five of the thirteen soldiers pictured graduated from SIUC and one of the five SIUC soldiers is SFC Joshua L Lueker, who is currently a College of Business Masters of Accountancy student. These soldiers proudly display their “Saluki Maroon.”

SIU alumnus creates Digital World Expo and hires Salukis to help
Shawn Rorick talks to students In an effort to provide this education as well as insights into the future, marketing and management alumnus Shawn Rorick (BS 1996) has applied his experience in development and media planning for big brands to create a special 3-day media insights and educational event. Digital World Expo features two full days of training and classroom-level education around over 30 different interactive channels and formats with over 60 sessions scheduled. In addition, a “stylized” exhibit hall will be presented to attendees looking for next-generation media technologies to accomplish their business goals for audience and revenue objectives.

Business college sets MBA Foundation Workshops - Christi Mathis, University Communications
The college will for the first time this fall offer the MBA Foundation Workshops. During a two-week session just prior to the fall semester, the foundation workshops will provide incoming MBA students with the basic knowledge of core business subject areas. This can substitute for 31 hours of undergraduate prerequisite coursework otherwise required if a student wants to earn an MBA but has not acquired a degree in business from an institution with accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Rita Cheng stands outside Rehn Hall with a group of high school students Minority students will travel from all over the country to Southern Illinois University Carbondale this month to explore opportunities in the world of business. About 30 high school juniors and seniors from as far away as California will be on campus June 18-25 for the “Exploring Careers in Business” summer residency program. The focus of the seminar is on finance, marketing, business economics, accounting, management, leadership skills and networking. In addition, the program includes intensive preparation work for the ACT test.

Quinn names SIU's Allan Karnes to IBHE - Tom Woolf, University Communications
portrait photo of Allan Karnes Gov. Pat Quinn has named Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Allan Karnes to a five-year term on the Illinois Board of Higher Education. The appointment of Karnes, associate dean of the College of Business, requires state Senate confirmation. Karnes joined SIUC’s accounting faculty as an instructor in 1981. He became an assistant professor in 1986, earning promotion to associate professor in 1990 and to professor in 1997. He served as director of the School of Accountancy from 1995 to 2005.

Business college to introduce 'iPad U' program - Christi Mathis, University Communications
student using an iPad 2 The College of Business at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is launching a new program to enhance business students' success and their connectivity to the college's faculty and staff. Beginning this fall, the iPad U program will provide all freshman business majors who reside in the Living Learning Community at Brown Hall on Thompson Point an iPad 2 for use during the 2011-2012 academic year. The technology tool will come loaded with applications to help students in the classroom and with their studies.

Reed Nelson to receive award for research impact - John Schumacher, University Communications
A professor emeritus from Southern Illinois University Carbondale's College of Business will receive a prestigious award for his influential published work on entrepreneurship. Reed Nelson, from the Department of Management, will receive the Greif Research Impact award for a paper published in the Administrative Science Quarterly journal. Co-author Ted Baker of North Carolina State University will also receive the honor.

photo of Rehn Hall The business college learned recently that it maintained both its business and accounting accreditations from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business-International. The AACSB accreditation team, comprised of representatives from peer institutions, visited campus in late January and early February for a comprehensive review of all aspects of the College of Business and based upon that review, granted reaccreditation.

Karnes named associate dean of business college - Christi Mathis, University Communications
photo of Allan Karnes Allan Karnes assumed the associate dean’s post earlier this month. Karnes joined the accounting faculty as an instructor in 1981. He became an assistant professor in 1986, earning promotion to associate professor in 1990 and to professor in 1997. He served as director of the School of Accountancy from 1995 to 2005. Karnes also has several years of accounting experience in commercial accounting firms.

College of Business commencement set for May 14 - Whitney Schaefer
photo of Dennis Cradit standing at podium On Saturday May 14, the College of Business and the Graduate School commencements will take place at the SIU Arena at 4 PM and 7 PM respectively. The College will have a total of 259 degree recipients. At the College’s undergraduate commencement, those graduating will include 45 accounting majors, 3 business administration major, 4 business economics majors, 51 finance majors, 74 management majors, and 53 marketing majors. For the Graduate School’s commencement, the College of Business will graduate 16 master of accountancy students, 8 master of business administration students, and 5 Ph.D. students.

Students, faculty, and staff recognized at 2011 Honors Day Ceremony - Whitney Schaefer
Terry Clark shakes the hand of student honoree Emily Morgan On April 17, the hard work and success of the College of Business students, faculty, and staff were recognized at the annual Honors Day awards presentation. 161 students were recognized with scholastic honors, and 183 students were awarded over $157,000 in scholarships and tuition waivers. One student from each major was recognized as the “Outstanding Senior” in his/her respective area: Lindsey Miller in accounting, Christopher Hooks in business economics, Cristina Trapani in finance, Estrella Martinez in management, and Lisa Dueker in marketing.

Named after the College's first Dean, the Society recognizes individuals who have made significant financial contributions to the College of Business to support and build its programs, services, professorships and scholarships through the years. The event honored new members Clint and Deb McDonnough, Beth Mueller, William and Joann Seaway, and Paul Sforza.

AMA hosts successful Polar Plunge, wins conference awards - Whitney Schaefer
students in Campus Lake On March 5, the SIU Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) hosted the first Polar Plunge event to take place at SIUC. Students and members of the community, some dressed in costume, jumped into the frigid waters of Campus Lake to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. This is one of eighteen Polar Plunge events that are held at lakes all across Illinois.

Julio Barrenzuela Earning the title of “Salsa Ambassador” from the mayor of Springfield, Illinois, College of Business alumnus Julio Barrenzuela became an entrepreneur right after graduating from SIUC. He started his company, Salsa 29 Productions, where he combines his passion for salsa dancing with motivational speaking to bring attention to important topics.

Former management chair passes away
Dr. Uma Sekaran ("Chinni") passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at her home in San Jose at the age of eighty four. The fourth of Mr. and Mrs. Pennathur Natesa Iyer's five children born in Madras (now called Chennai), India, she was married to Asthagiri ("George") Sekaran for 65 years until his demise in 2008.

France study abroad alumni take further adventures - Whitney Schaefer

Lee said he is making the endowment in appreciation of the education he received at the University, to assure future generations will likewise benefit, and to encourage faculty research and study. The Gregory A. Lee Professorship in Management recognizes a tenured or tenure-track management faculty member in the College of Business who has earned national recognition for research efforts and who teaches and mentors students.

Accounting Challenge draws 350 participants - Christi Mathis, University Communications
photo of students The test seemed simple enough for the 350 students attending the Accounting Challenge at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Begin by placing an egg in a plastic bag and then create a container to encapsulate it using a bit of paper, a paper bag and some masking tape. Oh, but there’s a catch. The container had to so insulate the egg that it wouldn’t break when dropped from the second-floor balcony at the Student Recreation Center to the gym floor below. Many tried. Few succeeded.
