On March 5, the SIU Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) hosted the first Polar Plunge event to take place at SIU. Students and members of the community, some dressed in costume, jumped into the frigid waters of Campus Lake to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. This is one of eighteen Polar Plunge events that are held at lakes all across Illinois.

Almost 200 "plungers" participated, collecting donations from family, friends, and/or local businesses that totaled more than $27,000. From this, the SIU AMA chapter earned first place in the Chapter Fundraising Division at the International AMA Conference held in New Orleans on March 24-26. They also took home first place in the prestigious Chapter Planning Division, which reflected admirably on the members’ business and marketing planning skills they have learned at SIU.

Dr. Cheryl Burke Jarvis, Faculty Advisor of AMA and Associate Professor of Marketing, spoke highly of the College of Business RSO, saying, "They are a great group of very talented and hardworking students, and their achievements reflect on the education they’ve received at SIU."

AMA is already beginning to plan next year's Polar Plunge. To see pictures from this year's event, please visit the Special Olympics Illinois website.
