Scott Polczynski Scott Polczynski is a Master of Accountancy student in the class of 2015 at Southern Illinois University. His focus during the course of his studies is in Auditing and Information Systems. Prior to his Masters, Scott earned his bachelors in accounting from SIU as well graduating in 2014. We recently caught up with him to discuss all things SIU Accounting and inquire about what his plans are for the future.

PSE College of Business students excelled during a two-day regional conference in Iowa SIU College of Business students exhibit excellence during a conference held the weekend of October 31. Marc Morris, director of the Master of Accountancy program (MAcc) The Carbondale native and SIU alumnus steps into the shoes of Marcus Odom, professor of accountancy and Deloitte & Touche Faculty Fellow. “I grew up in Carbondale, so I earned my undergraduate at SIU, left for a while, came back, got my MBA here, went to University of Wisconsin Law School to get my J.D., and came back,” Morris said. “A few years later I got my Ph.D. in accounting. I just remembered how this place was when I was here as a student, and the professors and the impression they had on me when I was walking the halls, and I felt this was a good way to give back.”

Dr. Dena Hale Dr. Dena Hale, a true “product of SIU,” is the newest member of Rehn Hall. She joined the SIU College of Business this semester as a new marketing lecturer. Marketing Graduate Wins Big in Vegas - Emily Precht
Robyn Phelan, SIU marketing alum Robyn Phelan, senior marketing manager at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, is making her mark in the city known as “The Entertainment Capital of the World.” Phelan graduated from Southern Illinois University in 2011 with a degree in marketing and speech communication, with a specialization in public relations. As the senior marketing manager at the Palms, Phelan is responsible for all paid digital advertising.

Brandon Zanotti Brandon J. Zanotti was appointed Williamson County state’s attorney during a special meeting of the Williamson County Board on Monday. Zanotti, a Johnston City native, will replace longtime state’s attorney Charles Garnati, who, citing health reasons, announced last week he would leave office Monday, about two years into his eighth consecutive term in office.

SIU showed up on the magazine’s ranking of the top 50 entrepreneurial universities in the country. “Basically, it told us something we already knew. Study casts new light on insider trading - Christi Mathis
photo of Wanli Zhao New research by a team that includes a finance expert at Southern Illinois University Carbondale suggests that some illegal insider trading is the result of information leaks from state and federal regulatory agencies. Wanli Zhao, associate professor of finance, partnered with David M. Reeb, the Mr. and Mrs. Lin Jo Yan Professor in Banking and Finance at the National University of Singapore Business School, and Yuzhao Zhang, assistant professor at the Rutgers University Business School, for the study into insider trading involving supervised industries.

Rehn professor of finance, recently accepted the interim dean position. Greene will lead the College of Business during a search for a permanent replacement for J. Dennis Cradit, who accepted a position as dean of the College of Business at San Diego State University.

Associate Dean of SIU CoB, Dr. Cheryl Burke Jarivs It is crucial that businesses retain loyal customers in order to succeed, and a team of researchers including Southern Illinois University Carbondale faculty member Cheryl Burke Jarvis may change the way that businesses think about their customer relationships. The research, “Reaching the Breaking Point: A Dynamic Process Theory of Business-to-Business Customer Defection,” will be published in an upcoming issue of The Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. Jarvis is also incorporating the research into her classroom curriculum.

CoB students excel in the classroom and on the field - Christie Mitchell
SIU College of Business student and SIU pitcher, Sam Coonrod was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB Draft today. This is the earliest draft pick since 2008. Coonrod and fellow pitcher, Tyler Dray were also named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team. Dray graduated this May with a degree in accounting and a 3.67 GPA. This is his third-consecutive Scholar-Athlete team selection. Coonrod, a management major, finished his junior year with a 3.48 GPA.

Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor the College of Business bestows, recognizing outstanding contribution to business and industry. A tradition started in 1986, the awards banquet was established to pay tribute to exceptional business people who are also alumni and friends of the college.

Over 160 students were recognized for academic honors, and 20 outstanding student awards were given.

SIU College of Business student is creating a recipe revolution - Christie Mitchell
College of Business Finance and Marketing major, Alex Hutchinson, is generating a recipe revolution with his idea for an app that would take any recipe and convert it into a gluten free recipe. The idea was inspired by Hutchinson’s mother, Mary Lou Hutchinson, who had to relearn to cook for Hutchinson’s father, brother, and himself, all whom suffer from Celiac Disease.

Frederic Gaillot, a 1998 SIU MBA alumnus, has been appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Siniat France. Gaillot also earned a master’s degree in Management from Grenoble’s Ecole de Management, the College’s partner school in France.

SSIF holds first ever CoBA Challenge - Emily Morgan
During the first weekend in February, the Saluki Student Investment Fund (SSIF) held their first ever security analysis competition, the CoBA Challenge. The challenge was a competition among three teams of SSIF students who conducted a security analysis over a compressed amount of time (the weekend) and then presented their buy and sell decisions to the audience on Monday.

Chanta Thomas, an accounting doctoral student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is the recipient of a $10,000 Minority Doctoral Scholarship from KPMG Foundation. Thomas, of Belleville, received the award, renewable for up to five years, to help complete her studies.
