RSO Spotlight: Beta Alpha Psi

February 26, 2014, Emily Morgan

This week’s featured Registered Student Organization (RSO) is the Gamma Zeta Chapter of the business fraternity Beta Alpha Psi.

The purpose of Beta Alpha Psi is to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field.  This includes promoting the study and practice of accounting, finance, and information systems, providing opportunities for self-development, service and association among members and practicing professionals, and encouraging a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility.

Beta Alpha Psi sponsors Adopt-A-Spot trash pick-up sessions in the fall semester and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) in the spring semester. The VITA Program is a free tax service program, occurring now through April 12, that is open to students and low-to-moderate income families ($36,000 and below) in the local area. It takes place every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon (excluding March 8 and 15) in the Rehn Hall computer lab, room 17.

Beta Alpha Psi holds its general meetings at the School of Accountancy Professional Meetings every Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Lawson 151.  Beta Alpha Psi also recruits speakers to come in and present at the Professional Meetings.

Students eligible to join Beta Alpha Psi are sophomores who have completed or are currently enrolled in Managerial Accounting (ACCT 230).  They must complete two semesters of candidacy and have a GPA of 3.4 or higher by the end of their candidacy period.  Students at the junior level or higher must be enrolled in a 300 level accounting course (or higher) and complete one semester of candidacy. They also must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher by the end of their candidacy period. All candidates and members must complete 10 hours of community service each semester and attend 80% of the professional meetings.
