Honors Day ceremony recognizes outstanding students and achievements

The College of Business held its annual Honors Day awards ceremony on Saturday, April 5, in the Guyon Auditorium at Morris Library. The event was well-attended, and the venue was nearly at capacity. Over 160 students were recognized for academic honors, and 20 outstanding student awards were given.
Each major within the College of Business recognized an Outstanding Senior. The following students were chosen in his/her respective area: Scott Polczynski in Accounting, Allison Powell in Business and Administration, Curtis Brown in Business Economics, Christopher Whitmire in Finance, Savannah McCord in Management, and Katherine Moore in Marketing. Scott Polczynski was also honored as the College of Business’ overall Outstanding Senior.
Several other undergraduate awards were given out as well. Olivia Grant was recognized as the Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Outstanding Junior in Accountancy. Scott Polczynski was named the Accounting Circle Outstanding Senior and recognized as the Kemper CPA Group LLP Outstanding Contribution to the School of Accountancy. Cameron Thomas was named the Ernst & Young LLP Outstanding Senior in Accounting. Brian Dixon was recognized as the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Outstanding Senior in Accountancy. Lastly, Genevieve Phuah was given the Uma Sekaran Award for the Most Outstanding Female Management Major.
Seven graduate students were also recognized for their achievements in the College of Business. Hannah Gassmann was named the Federation of Schools of Accountancy Outstanding Graduate Student. Matthew Tupy was recognized as the Kemper CPA Group LLC Outstanding Contribution to the School of Accountancy. The Outstanding MBA Student award was given to Trevor Ward. Mateo Correa was named the Outstanding International MBA Student. The PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Outstanding Masters in Accountancy award was given to Brent Campbell. The Asthagiri Chandra Sekaran Award for the Most Outstanding Female MBA and Ph.D. Students were given to Michele Guy and Shuqin Wei.
New inductees of Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies were recognized. Beta Alpha Psi, specific to Accounting, Finance, and Management Information Systems majors, recognized seven new inductees while Beta Gamma Sigma, which honors juniors and seniors with GPAs in the top 10% of their class and graduates with GPAs in the top 20% of their class, recognized 101 new inductees.
Other event highlights included an Honors Day rap by the master of ceremonies and accounting professor, Tom Downen, musical entertainment by Dr. Wacker on the harp and an inspiring key note address by guest speaker and accounting alumna Diane Compardo.
