SIU College of Business student and SIU pitcher, Sam Coonrod was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB Draft today.  This is the earliest draft pick since 2008.

Coonrod and fellow pitcher, Tyler Dray were also named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team.  Dray graduated this May with a degree in accounting and a 3.67 GPA.  This is his third-consecutive Scholar-Athlete team selection.  Coonrod, a management major, finished his junior year with a 3.48 GPA.

“These student athletes have proven that you can be successful in the classroom as well as on the field,” SIU Coach Ken Henderson said. “Obtaining an education is ultimately why we are here, and I could not be more proud of these young men for this great accomplishment and well deserved recognition.”

Congratulations to both Coonrod and Dray on these tremendous accomplishments.  We wish you luck in your upcoming adventures.
