Larry Bailey For one week in November, Larry Bailey returned to his alma mater to serve as guest lecturer and meet with students, faculty and staff to share insights into his profession, create networking opportunities, and provide practical recommendations and some valuable words of wisdom. Considering SIU as family, it’s a matter of the heart for him to encourage young people and give back to the school where he grew up. Bailey, a Class of ’72 alumnus, is one of the three representatives of the Executive in Residence (EIR) program of the College of Business.

Successful CoB Graduate Inspires Students to Turn Challenges into Advantages - Svetlana Bondar
Nathan Stooke Nathan Stooke, a SIU College of Business 2002 graduate, and his wireless Internet company, Wisper ISP, have been recognized by St. Louis Small Business Monthly as one of the area’s rising companies. Nominations by readers placed the company among the publication’s “Future 50.” The annual award lauds both the top companies and the companies to watch. Stooke and Wisper ISP were featured in the publication’s September issue.

The 11 award winners in the inaugural class were nominated by the college’s external advisory boards for their special achievements at the early stage of their careers and were celebrated during the reception.

Steven and Brian Ta, accounting majors Accounting majors and Chicago natives Steven Ta and Brian Ta are extraordinary examples of first-generation students. At the ages of 21 and 18, respectively, their drive and dedication has touched the lives of many of their fellow classmates, as well as SIU College of Business faculty and staff members, and the local community in Carbondale. Steven Ta, a senior, and Brian Ta, a freshman, reflected on their brotherhood and SIU education while offering some valuable words of wisdom for prospective SIU students: Be involved, do something unique, be yourself!

McCord named Lincoln Academy student laureate - Christi Mathis
photo of Savannah McCord Savannah McCord is the 2015 Lincoln Academy of Illinois student laureate for Southern Illinois University Carbondale. McCord, of St. Louis, is set to graduate with a double major in management and psychology in May 2016. She will be honored with the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award, which comes with a medallion, certificate of achievement and monetary award, during the annual Student Laureate Convocation on Nov. 7 in the Old State Capital in Springfield.

SIU’S program came in at No. 39 on the list..

Zhao has been a vital part of studies that revealed how investors do better when regulators and politicians keep their eyes open. The results of the investigation were recently mentioned on the website of, which is a subsidiary of Dow Jones, a property of News Corp. In 2012, the publication reported more than 17 million unique users and had been honored several times as a top large business-focused website.

Etiquette Dinner 2015 Promoting a culture of excellence, the College of Business conducted its traditional Student Etiquette Dinner Oct 1. The event gave students the opportunity to receive expert advice on networking and business etiquette, as well as the chance to become more comfortable and confident in professional situations. The dinner took place in the ballrooms of the SIU Student Center and attracted nearly 200 attendees, including board members and alumni.

Three new faculty members have joined the College of Business this fall! - Svetlana Bondar

One of them is Nwamaka (Amaka) Anaza, a new assistant professor in the Department of Marketing. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SIU, and her Ph.D. from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Anaza’s return to the university shows a true devotion to the Saluki family. “Being a Saluki is very special to me.”

For two consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report deemed its online MBA one of the “Best Online Graduate Business Programs,” climbing to No. 36 this year from last year’s No. 51 position. The future couldn’t look brighter, as new collaborations with the colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering recently have been announced.

In this new role, he oversees the bank’s key locations in Southern Illinois. Saluki Innovation Series For the first time in the school’s history, the Southern Illinois University campus-registered student organizations Saluki Entrepreneur Corps, Saluki Ventures and University Innovation Fellows joined forces during the 2015 fall semester to launch a year-long series of events that is designed to encourage creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial thinking among students of all majors.

SIU Carbondale ranked the fourth healthiest college in US for students Great way to start off this new academic year. According to a recent published GrubHub analysis, our Salukis are healthy eaters. The online food delivery company ranked the 40 healthiest colleges throughout the United States and Southern Illinois University Carbondale came in fourth closely behind number one University of Buffalo, St. John’s University and UC Davis.

Jarvis earns recognition from business journal - Christi Mathis
photo of Cheryl Jarvis A prestigious business journal has recognized an article co-authored by Southern Illinois University Carbondale faculty member Cheryl Burke Jarvis as one of the most cited articles in the journal’s history. Jarvis, associate dean of the College of Business and marketing professor, along with colleagues Scott B. MacKenzie, Neal Gilliatt, chair of Marketing at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and Philip M. Podsakoff, professor emeritus of management, also at Indiana University, wrote “A Critical Review of Construct Indicators and Measurement Model Misspecification in Marketing and Consumer Research,” published in September 2003.

Great news from the Southern Illinois University College of Business: Ph.D. alumni Ramendra Thakur (2005, Marketing) and Dhoha A. Alsaleh (2010, Marketing) have been awarded a $35,000 grant from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) for their joint research proposal on corporate blogging. They are set to submit their comparative study to the Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science Grant by mid-2016.
