Graduation: The Beginning of New Adventures for Former Students - Chelsea Kujawa
December graduation took place Dec. 17 at SIU Arena, marking the end to a successful semester for students. Saturday was a special day for individuals who walked across the stage to receive the degrees they have worked diligently to earn, and some graduates shared their thoughts about the time they spent in the college over the past few years, their plans for the future, and advice for those still pursuing their degrees.

RSO Spotlight: Saluki Student Investment Fund and Graduate Student Investment Fund - Chelsea Kujawa
The Saluki Student Investment Fund (SSIF) and Graduate Student Investment Fund (GSIF) are two College of Business registered student organizations (RSOs) that provide students with hands-on experience in portfolio management and investment research. As such, the SSIF and GSIF are modeled after a real investment management firm. Members are focused on making the best possible investment decisions on behalf of their primary client, the SIU Foundation, who also provides fiduciary oversight for both programs. The RSOs’ competitive advantages are the students’ unique and unbiased perspective and their ability to spot trends in the markets – especially those that are perhaps driven by (or favored by) their generation.

Internationally Recognized Faculty Research - Chelsea Kujawa
Our faculty members are heavily involved in noteworthy research, and they are frequently cited and consulted as experts in their respective fields. Their research is highly recognized all over the world. Thanks to the generous donation from alumni, Ronald Smith, the faculty can share their research through videos. The college and our alumni are proud to support faculty members in their pursuit of knowledge creation.

It’s the time of year when proud alumni return back home to remember their college days. Homecoming means that alumni from around the world return to campus to celebrate their success with their peers, retired faculty members, and having the chance to meet new faculty. The college honored Emerging Saluki Leader Award winners at the Homecoming Reception. These alumni are deserving of recognition for their outstanding achievements in business, academia, government, not-for-profit organizations or service to their community. The awardees are proud to be Salukis and are outstanding College of Business alumni.

Management Professor Wins Prestigious Award for Operations Management Research - Christie Mitchell
John Goodale recently received the 2016 Ambassador Award from the Journal of Operations Management (JOM). The award is given to a paper published in JOM that is widely cited in literature across academic disciplines over the previous five years. Goodale said his goal is to have his research lead to contributions in academics, industry, and in the classroom.

Alumna Keeps the Saluki Connection going through Internship Opportunities - Chelsea Kujawa
SIU alum, Penny Clancy is Vice President of Human Resources at Sentinel Technologies Inc. in Downers Grove, Illinois. Her company has been recognized for more than 25 years as a leader in providing business technology services, from end-to-end solutions to targeted applications. As such, Sentinel is one of the leading IT services and solutions providers in the United States.

RSO Spotlight: Business Leadership Council - Chelsea Kujawa
The Business Leadership Council’s goal is to work for the betterment of the students and Registered Student Organizations within the college. The council is closely involved with the dean’s office and works to provide a link between the students and faculty. The council is very active and is striving to be an even bigger voice within the college and the school community.

Good Luck, Joe Pineau! - Chelsea Kujawa
For a quarter-century, Joe Pineau inspired students in SIU Carbondale’s College of Business to do their best. Pineau, who recently retired from his post as an academic advisor in the College of Business, made it his mission to push students to be prepared for their advisement appointments – and to take responsibility for their academic careers, too. He always was ready to start a conversation and help students in any way he could.

The College of Business’s Annual School of Accountancy Career Fair took place on Sept. 22 at the SIU Arena. The career fair was geared toward accounting students who are seeking internships or full-time positions upon graduation or networking with employers. Recruiters, students, faculty and staff got a chance to socialize and network with each other.

Welcome Back Festivities - Chelsea Kujawa
The College of Business kicked off the new academic year with some exciting activities that allowed students to meet the college’s professors and also get to know their fellow students. The first of the festivities took place Aug. 18, when nearly 150 students moved into Brown Hall, one of the 11 residence halls in Thompson Point that houses mostly business students.

The Career Closet will have clothing that students will be able to rent for interviews and other professional events. On May 2, the College of Business recognized the hard work of its faculty and staff. Seven individuals were honored for their accomplishments and contributions over the past academic year. Greg DeYong, assistant professor of operations management, was named the 2016 College of Business Outstanding Researcher of the Year. DeYong teaches undergraduate classes focusing on supply chain management, advanced operations management and operations strategy for global competition.

In his first year as Saluki, Elijah Jeremiah Barber quickly has evolved into a shining star in SIU’s College of Business. Whether it’s officiating intramural basketball games in the Student Recreation Center, selling cupcakes on behalf of the registered student organization Ascend or networking with alumni as one of the new College of Business mentees, the versatile finance major wasted no time getting immersed in Saluki culture.

Richard Barrett, Business Administration '66 Fifty years after graduating from SIU’s College of Business with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Richard Barrett returned to his alma mater in the first week of April to lead classroom lectures, conduct mock interviews, share his professional experience with students and provide valuable words of wisdom. His overall advice to all current, future and graduating Salukis is to be proactive, because “there are opportunities out there, but they rarely come to you. You have to go to them.”

Chair of the Department of Management, Peter Mykytyn Jr., congratulates the College of Business' outstanding senior, Noppadol Tuksakulvith SIU’s College of Business recognized its outstanding seniors from every department April 9 at its annual Honors Day. These students have shown great promise during their time at the college and were noted for their efforts by their respective departments. Each department selected its outstanding senior based on a number of criteria, ranging from academic achievement and high GPA to active involvement and service to the department.

Dean Jason Greene and the new Hall of Fame inductees at the Hall of Fame awards ceremony This spring, four alumni of the SIU College of Business were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the college’s annual awards ceremony. The first Hall of Fame awards ceremony held by the college took place in 1986. The event honors the outstanding professional achievements of the college’s alumni and their significant contributions to its success. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor the college bestows.

In preparation for the university-wide Saluki Student Job Fair that took place on April 19 at the SIU Student Center Ballrooms, Business Placement Center director Danna Lewis provided a guide of the most important “do’s and don’ts” for College of Business students to get the most out of attending career fairs. These often-overlooked gold mines of networking and employment opportunities are regularly offered by University Career Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Honors Day 2016 The SIU College of Business continued one of the university’s oldest and richest traditions April 9 with its annual Honors Day in Morris Library’s Guyon Auditorium. The ceremony, which featured awards and music, plus an inspirational keynote message from accomplished finance alum Drew Stoker, recognized the hard work and superior academic achievements of more than 220 students. A special highlight of the program was the announcement of the winner of the Outstanding Senior Award in the College of Business.

Attendees of the Career Trip to St. Louis Early in the fall semester, marketing alum, Rich Klassen, had the idea of connecting students with College of Business alums to assist them in building business relationships. In partnership with the College of Business Career Placement Center, this idea became a reality when College of Business students, who are part of the Mentor Program, attended a career trip to St. Louis this spring to meet with area alums.

Paying tribute to Mike Haywood Tough shoes to fill: After 28 years of being the voice for the underrepresented student population at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Michael Haywood Sr., legendary director of the SIU College of Business Office of Minority Affairs, officially retired in December. His extraordinary service and dedication were recognized during halftime of a Saluki men’s basketball game, followed by a retirement party at the Stadium Club Suites. His exit leaves a gaping void – yet, at the same time, it provides an opportunity for growth and change.

VITA volunteers helping out people with their tax returns Every Saturday morning, from 8 a.m. to noon through April 9, a dozen accounting students from the College of Business at Southern Illinois University Carbondale voluntarily provide quick, accurate tax-return preparation assistance to fellow students and southern Illinois community members in the computer labs of Rehn Hall. The best part: There’s no charge for the hassle-free service.

American Marketing Association rocks the Polar Plunge yet again - Svetlana Bondar
2016 Polar Plungers and dashers The American Marketing Association in the SIU College of Business recently chalked up another success in organizing the annual Polar Plunge challenge. The event, presented by Law Enforcement Torch Run and GEICO, raises funds for Special Olympics Illinois athletes. To take part in the Polar Plunge, participants had to raise $100 in donations from anyone interested in supporting Special Olympics. The proceeds from the event benefit Special Olympics Illinois athletes.

And the tradition continues: The 18th annual College of Business Accounting Challenge garners interest through humor and wit - Katja Sonkeng
2016 Accounting Challenge The annual two-part event drew more than 320 students from local high school and community colleges to the SIU Recreation Center on Friday, Feb. 19, where they competed in a tomato-smashing team competition and other individual hands-on creative challenges to test their accounting and problem-solving skills. The winner in the individual contests earned certificates along with scholarships worth up to $500 for those who attend SIU and major in accounting, while the highest-scoring teams received trophies.

SIU to host 18th annual Accounting Challenge - Christi Mathis
SIU to host 18th annual Accounting Challenge Hundreds of high school and community college students from around the region will compete at the 18th annual Accounting Challenge at SIUC on Friday, Feb. 19. Participants can win college scholarships and other prizes in the event, sponsored by the CoB’s School of Accountancy. About 325 students will be at the Student Recreation Center for the challenge, which incorporates individual and team tests of skills and knowledge.

College of Business dean forums Four candidates for dean of the College of Business will meet with constituents during a series of forums beginning next week. The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer for the SIU College of Business and is responsible for its academic programs, fiscal management, personnel, external relations, recruitment and retention, among other areas. All candidates must have a strong record of academic leadership and administrative experience.

“It’s the best money I spent”: CoB invites students on its annual study abroad trip to France - Katja Sonkeng
The 2015 Study Abroad group Entering its 14th year of existence, one of the largest study abroad programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is now accepting applications for the 2016 trip to the Alpine city of Grenoble in southeastern France. From May 16 through June 11, the participants of the SIU College of Business Study Abroad program will be attending classes at Grenoble Graduate School of Business’ main campus for the first three weeks before concluding their coursework at its Paris location during the last five days. The deadline for the program, which is open to all majors across campus, is March 1.

Executive in Residence program The newly established Executive in Residence (EIR) program provides students, faculty and staff of the College of Business an opportunity to network with the college’s alumni who are successful in the business world. With her one-year anniversary approaching, the director of the only college-focused career and placement center on campus recapped the progress made in the last year, discussed current events and services, shared exciting news about the upcoming launch of a new career portal March 1, and other makeover plans on the horizon.
