Dr. Sylvia Smith joined the faculty at SIU in 2007. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee while completing research on Culinary Tourism. Her interest in food is what landed her in Carbondale, Illinois. During one of her interviews, she had a chance to visit the local farmer’s market. The market, people, and produce were so abundant and thriving she recognized the quality of life that could be possible in the Carbondale community. In 2010, she helped establish the Illinois Farmers Market Association.
Professor Smith has over twenty years of restaurant industry experience and teaches many of the foodservice management classes in the Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management program at SIU. Not surprisingly, her research interests focus on food and beverage topics, such as culinary tourism, local foods, craft beer, and sensory evaluation. Smith is published in academic journals and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, Tourism Management, International Journal for Hospitality Management, and Journal of Quality Assurance. Additionally, she is a member to the Society of Sensory Professionals as well as an institutional member to the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE).
