The College of Business and Analytics is committed to supporting students at every stage of their educational journey. We believe financial barriers should never hinder the path to a degree, which is why we offer a variety of need-based and merit-based scholarships specifically for business students.
How to Apply
Students may apply to all of the University and College scholarships available to them by completing one online application at siu.academicworks.com. Use your SIU Dawgtag and network password to sign in, then complete the application and additional questions.

It is important to note that students may receive multiple scholarship offers, but the total amount of federal, state, and institutional financial aid, including scholarships, cannot exceed the total SIU cost of attendance budget determined by the Financial Aid Office. Institutional scholarships may be reduced to meet this requirement.

Chris Jones Memorial Scholarship

The Chris Jones Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 by Gail and Randy Jones and Chris’ brothers and sisters in Pi Sigma Epsilon. This Award was founded in memory of Christopher J. Jones, 23, of Marion whose outstanding leadership, quiet confidence and zest for life, made him a friend to all he met. Chris began his education at SIU Carbondale in the fall of 2000 and graduated with a degree in Marketing in December of 2002. Chris was an active member of Pi Sigma Epsilon and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. After graduation, Christopher went to work for Team Enterprises USA in California where he worked in marketing. His life was tragically cut short in a drowning accident on the Current River in Missouri during the summer of 2003.
Scholarship for a full-time senior in the College of Business and Analytics. Recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Recipient must be actively involved in a College of Business & Analytics registered student organization (RSO) and must display unusual leadership abilities throughout their career at SIU. Must have a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor of their RSO detailing their leadership achievements.
Clara J. Kridle Memorial Scholarship

Clara J. Kridle (maiden name Clara Rigoni) was born on February 13, 1959, in Elmhurst, Illinois and graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. There she met her husband, Kevin, also an SIU graduate (August 1980). They have two children, Kristen (a SIU graduate) and Nickolas. Professionally, Clara was a CPA and a partner with the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. She was a devoted wife and mother and provided time, resources, and talent to various organizations serving the community. Clara passed away on May 9, 2017. Through the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc., a scholarship was established with the SIU College of Business in her memory to honor her 33 years of service to the firm. In the words of the PwC Board of Partners and Principals via a Memorial Resolution recognizing her “considerable contribution to the success of the firm” they wrote: “Clara was held in the highest regard by her clients, her partners and her staff. She exemplified partnership and teamwork, always stepping up to lend a hand or provide guidance. She was tenacious and persistent and had a “never give up” approach to every professional challenge. She was a true leader in mentoring and coaching our people. Said one partner, “not a day goes by that I don’t see Clara in a huddle with her team giving-in-the moment feedback or participating with remote teams on client work. She was patient with our people and was sought after for career advice. Clara was a credit to her profession and to this firm. She will not be forgotten."
Clint and Deb McDonnough Scholarship

Clint McDonnough grew up in Pinckneyville, IL, and graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1977 with an accounting degree. He began his career with Ernst & Young in 1977 in the St. Louis office where he met Deb. Deb McDonnough is from Highland, IL, and graduated with an accounting degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In 1982 Clint transferred to the National office where he worked on the development of the firm’s audit approach and statistical sampling. 1985 brought Clint to Dallas where he still resides with his wife Deb and their three children. Clint and Deb believe that a college degree is the gateway to help fulfill career goals. Growing up in southern Illinois, they wanted to provide financial support and opportunities for southern Illinois high school graduates to pursue a college degree in business and to inspire them to contribute to the southern Illinois economy in a leadership role. Scholarship for an Illinois high school senior from a high school in one of the Connect SI counties: Alexander, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, Union, Wabash, Wayne, White, or Williamson. Recipients must have a major in the College of Business and Analytics and demonstrated financial need.
College of Business and Analytics CFA Scholarship

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) credential has become the most respected and recognized investment designation in the world. The CFA Program curriculum covers concepts and skills that will be used at all stages of a finance career, bridging academic theory, current industry practice, and ethical and professional standards to provide a strong foundation of advanced investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills. The CFA Program includes a series of three exams: Level I, II. and III. These exams are offered annually at testing centers around the world. These exams must be passed sequentially. Several distinguished SIU alums in the field of finance as well as companies and recruiters have emphasized that SIU students need to be candidates at the time they send their applications/resumes in for a job to make them more desirable in the candidate search pools. These alums have also offered to support a scholarship such as this. Recipient(s) must be a College of Business major, with an overall GPA of at least 3.0. Recipient must also have senior standing or be a graduate student. Applicants will submit an essay of no more than one page, including such topics as, but not limited to, professional goals, and how the CFA will help them reach those goals.

The Covington Entrepreneurial Award will be open to all applicants with the following qualifications:
- Must be from southern Illinois (south of I-70).
- Must be WORKING AND have some business experience.
- Must have career goals that involve owning his or her own business.
- Must be undergraduate marketing majors (freshmen-senior) in good academic standing (grades are not a factor). Applicants must submit a statement discussing why they are entrepreneurial, their aspirations for owning or running their own business, and how they will use the money.

Emme Family Scholarship

The Emme Family Scholarship was established by Jeff and Kelly Emme. They wanted to give back to the University (and town) that helped lay the foundation for Jeffs career in tax and accounting and to honor former accounting faculty member Phil Neal, who inspired Jeff to pursue a career in tax. Jeff graduated from SIUC in 1980 with a BS in Accounting. He also has a Master of Tax from DePaul University and held the position of Senior Vice President-Tax at Sara Lee Corporation. Both Jeff and Kelly’s parents were long-time residents of Carbondale. Jeff and Kelly both graduated from Carbondale Community High School and Jeff’s father Harold taught there for over 30 years. Harold Emme graduated from SIUC in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in education and in 1964 he received his Master’s, also from SIUC. Harold was a member of SIUC’s Saluki basketball team in 1958 and 1959. Carol Emme, Jeff’s mother, returned to college after raising Jeff and his sister Beth and received a degree from the SIU College of Business in 1979. Carol then worked at SIU in Financial Affairs for 17 years before retiring in 1996. Beth (Emme) Burns graduated from the University of Illinois in 1984, but her degree included attending a Phil Neal business class at SIUC in 1982. Kelly’s father Richard Craig worked as an air traffic controller at the SIUC Airport from 1975 through 1980. Given the significance of SIU and the town of Carbondale to Jeff, Kelly, and their families, they have a desire to pay forward the benefits they have realized and are doing so by establishing this Emme Family Scholarship Endowment. Scholarship for students from Carbondale Community HS with a major in the College of Business & Analytics. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need, as determined by the SIU Financial Aid Office.
Frederick and Ellen Chiu Scholarship

The Frederick and Ellen Chiu Scholarship was established by Fred and Ellen Chiu of Norwalk, CA. who met at Southern Illinois University through the Chinese Student Organization. Both studied accounting at SIUC. Fred came to SIUC from Hong Kong and Ellen from Shanghai. Fred is the Executive Vice President of Polar Foods, which was established in 1976. Polar has grown steadily over the years to provide retailers such as Kroger, Eckerd Drugs, Albertsons, Publix, Spartan and many more with the finest products available at a value. Fred and Ellen established his scholarship to provide support and help ease the financial burden of Chinese students at SIUC. Now, very successful, they remember how difficult it was as new student.
The Frederick and Ellen Chiu Scholarship will be open to all applicants with the following qualifications:
- An admitted undergraduate or graduate international student to the College of Business and Analytics with preference given to a student of Chinese descent.
- The scholarship may be renewed with application for additional semesters if the recipient maintains enrollment status as a student in the College of Business and maintains good academic standing.

The Gloria Dean Battles Scholarship was established by Candice McCloud. Candice graduated from SIU Carbondale with a degree in marketing in 2007. She credits her education and mentors at SIU for beginning a successful career at Aldi Inc. Candice wanted to establish this scholarship to help give business students at SIU some financial assistance to make it easier to obtain a degree. Candice and her family wish to honor their mother and grandmother respectively who were an inspiration in their lives. The Harvey N. Michaels Business Scholarship was established by Harvey N. Michaels, who has a B.S. in Accounting and an MBA both from SIU Carbondale. Harvey is a member of the School of Accountancy Board of Advisors. His gift is in support of the first ever comprehensive campaign at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Time, talent and treasure describe the support that Harvey has provided to the College of Business and Analytics at Southern Illinois University. The Howell Financial Scholarship will be open to all applicants, with an undergraduate major in the College of Business and Analytics with good academic standing, who are residents of Randolph County, Illinois.
James B. and Rosemary Samuel Childress Scholarship

The James B. and Rosemary Samuel Childress Scholarship established by James and Rosemary Childress of Carterville, IL. They were married while Jim was going to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Jim had a job at the post office in Carterville where he worked 50 hours a week while going to SIU. He remembers that he had to beat the mail truck home. Jim and Rosemary wanted to ease the financial burden of a business student with a scholarship to help pay for tuition, while the student contributes to his/her other college expenses, including fees, books and supplies, and perhaps living expenses. Scholarship for a College of Business student who is a graduate from a high school in Jackson or Williamson County, Illinois. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need. Applicants must submit a statement that addresses their financial situation in regard to paying for college.

The Katy Becker Simonds Scholarship is available to sophomores who have a declared major in the College of Business and Analytics. The recipient shall be a native of one of the following Illinois counties: Perry, Franklin, Saline, Gallatin, Jackson, Williamson, Union, Johnson, Polk, Hardin, Alexander, Pulaski, or Massac. Recipients should have financial need and must show an effort toward providing for their own education by holding a summer or part-time job while they are enrolled in school. Lynn McPheeters was raised on a farm near Canton, Illinois in Fulton County. After graduating from high school, he attended Canton Jr. College, now Spoon River College. He transferred to Southern Illinois University Carbondale and graduated in 1964 with a B.S. in Accounting. He was the first generation in his family to attend college. He went to work for Caterpillar where he had a 40-year career that culminated with retirement in 2005 as VP and Chief Financial Officer of the company. This scholarship has been endowed to provide opportunities for first-generation students from his hometown area that want to pursue a business education. Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in the College of Business and Analytics who is a first-generation college student. Preference is given to students from Fulton, Peoria, Tazewell, Mason, and Marion counties, although students from south of I-80 will also be considered.

Michael Bernard was born in Chicago and grew up in Kincaid and Taylorville, Illinois. His mother, Yolanda, with her Italian roots, seven siblings, Papa next door, his brothers and eighteen cousins nearby motivated him to go to SIUC. He is a 1970 graduate of the College of Business and holds a Master’s from SIU with a concentration in College and University Business Affairs. His education helped him build a career in healthcare, working in administration at hospitals across the country, culminating in becoming President for the 10 hospital National Division. The Theta Xi Beta Delta Scholarship was established by alumni of the Beta Delta Chapter of Theta XI in memoriam of past members, beginning with Jim Berg, who passed away January 2004. This scholarship is made possible through the generous donations of the alumni of the Beta Delta Chapter. Scholarship for a student in the College of Business & Analytics who is a current member in good standing of a Greek organization on campus. Recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. A letter from a chapter officer is required to complete eligibility. If you are chosen as a finalist, you must be prepared to submit a letter from a chapter officer confirming that you are an active member in good standing.

Douglas E. Kelly Memorial Scholarship

The Douglas E. Kelly Memorial Scholarship was established by Janice H. Kelly in memory of her late husband Douglas. Janice met Douglas while attending SIUC. Douglas was raised and grew up in Southern Illinois and attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale to obtain his accounting degree in 1957. Douglas E. Kelly, CPA, was a member of the National Association for Black Accountants (NABA) St. Louis Chapter for 23 years. During his NABA tenure, he exhibited dedication and loyalty and exemplified the spirit of NABA “Lifting as We Climb” through his continuous work on the tax workshop and other programs. Douglas volunteered during those 23 years to work with NABA Tax Workshop to prepare income tax returns for low and moderate taxpayers. Douglas retired from the IRS as Chief Appeals Officer. Douglas enjoyed helping SIUC students. He served on the SIUC College of Business Minority Advisory Board and shared his expertise in the classroom with students. Janice has established criteria that matches his academic career and to some extent his professional career. Douglas believed in giving back to his community, so it is important that the student who receives this scholarship is active in university extracurricular and/or community activities.

- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a minimum in-major GPA of 3.0.

George is a member of the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC) College of Business Department of Finance Board of Advisors. He graduated from SIUC in 1973 with a BS in Accounting and a BS in Finance. He is a Certified Public Accountant. He received his MBA from Northern Illinois University in 1979 and his MST in 2003. George began his career after he graduated from SIUC in 1973 with McGraw-Edison Company as Internal Auditor and left in 1984 as CFO. He worked as CFO from 1984 to 1989 with CR Industries and CFO from 1989 to 1994 with Boulevard Bancorp. He served as the CFO at MacLean-Fogg Company from1994-2018. George has also been active on several boards. He is past president of the Financial Executives International, and board member of Maynard Manufacturing, Detroit; Presswork, Krefeld Germany, and Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, Illinois where he was also chairman of the Finance Committee. After completing two years of study at SIU, Pamela Cook entered the workforce for 5 years, after which she became a homemaker, raising four children over the next 20 years. Pamela then returned to her education, completing an undergraduate degree from Benedictine University, finishing with a Social Science degree from the College of Liberal Arts. In 2006, Pamela rounded out her education with a Master’s degree from the School of Social Services Administration (SSA) at the University of Chicago. Pamela re-entered the workforce in 2008 and served as a therapeutic case manager for Jane Addams Hull House, assigned to a program for adolescent teens. The Hubert (Herb) and Barbara Avent Scholarship is named for Herb ‘69 and Barbara, his wife. Herb was born in Oxford, Mississippi and began elementary school in Chicago. Upon graduating from high school in Mississippi, he joined the US Army. Upon discharge, Herb attended Southern Illinois University of Carbondale and obtained his BS degree in Marketing. Herb was a member of the American Marketing Association. After graduation he worked as an Academic Advisor in the College of Business and Administration (CoB) and served as director of the college’s Encouragement of Black Businessmen and Economist (EBBE) program. Herb opened the Nubian II Bar and Eatery in 1968 on the north side of Carbondale. Later, he worked as a Lecturer/Planner for the development of SIU College of Medicine and enrolled in the SIU’s Master’s in public health program. He believes in giving back to his community. In 1971, he began to work in a community health center, providing primary health care services, located in East St. Louis, Illinois. He became national Director of the community health center program’s Urban Health Initiative program in 1980. Herb was voted into the SIU CoB Hall of Fame in 1999 and served as the President of the SIU Black Alumni Group from 1999-2003. As creators of the Hubert and Barbara Avent Scholarship, they have created criteria that matches Herb’s academic career and to some extent his professional career. “Herb has two children who are both graduates of SIU and his family thanks Southern Illinois for this honor. Herb knows education is the key to success,” said Michael Haywood College of Business Director of Minority Affairs.
